What counts as a silenced fan?

A silenced fan is not a smaller motor. It is a duct fan whose motor and impeller sit inside an acoustically insulated housing — a lined shell that soaks up motor whine and air rush before that sound leaves the unit. Run an EC motor at part speed in that shell and extraction fades into the background, instead of a hum travelling through every wall in the house. Growers reach for this setup when the tent sits in a house or against a shared wall, and a bare extract would be the loudest thing in the room.

EC motors plus speed and climate controllers keep them near-silent at the speeds a tent actually uses. On the T-series, the Controller 69 Pro only winds the fan up when temperature or humidity asks for it.

Building a quiet extract

1. Go up a size and run it slow. Give the extract some headroom. A 200mm unit loafing at level 4 moves the same air as a 150mm unit pinned wide open, and it is far quieter.
2. Line the run with noise-reducing ducting. Bare aluminium duct is a speaking tube — it carries fan noise straight to the vent. Insulated acoustic ducting soaks that sound up.
3. Hang the fan off the frame. Use straps rather than bolting the unit to the tent poles, so vibration cannot drum through the structure.
4. Match the carbon filter. A choked or undersized carbon filter makes the fan work harder and louder. Same diameter, fresh carbon.
5. Treat the duct ends. What noise is left mostly escapes at the outlet. A longer run with gentle bends beats a short, straight blast.
