Propagation Domes & Trays FAQ's
For most soft cuttings, yes. Until roots form, a cutting cannot replace the water leaving its leaves, so an open tray usually wilts before it strikes. The dome holds moisture above the tray and slows that loss. The exception is an aerated cloning station: water is delivered to the stem itself, so a dome is not required.
This range is built around a 37.5 x 23cm footprint, and Garland make their trays and dome lids to that size so the parts interchange. Bigger options are a 60cm square and a 120 x 55cm heavy-duty tray. Pick by how many cells you need to fit, then check the dome height on its own.
A vent is how you drop humidity in steps instead of all at once. After cuttings strike they have to get used to ordinary room air, and cracking the vent a little at a time hardens them off without the shock of lifting the whole lid. The Stewart Garden Premium Propagator has an adjustable vent; the Mondi kit is a vented design.
It lifts the dome so taller cuttings do not push against the lid. A cutting that stays pressed to a wet dome stays wet and is more likely to rot; bending it to fit is worse. AC Infinity include a height extension on both the 5x8 and 6x12 cell kits, so one kit covers short seedlings and taller cuttings.
Yes — that is the usual arrangement. A solid-based tray spreads the heat evenly across the cells, which is why the Heat N Grow set pairs a solid black tray with a clear dome and is sized for heated propagation mats. Sit the tray on the mat; do not put the cells straight onto it.
Yes. Domes crack well before trays wear through, so the replacements are sold on their own. The Garland Large High Dome Propagator Lid is a 37.5 x 23 x 12cm replacement that fits Garland large propagator trays, and the matching netted seed tray is 37.5 x 23 x 6cm. Buying them separately is also how you put a taller dome on a standard base.
