A clone tent is built short and wide, around a tray of cuttings rather than a plant that will fill the space. Humid air stays near the propagation dome, the interior is easy to wipe down, and a small light hangs at the right height without extra rigging.

Footprints run from about 0.6 x 0.6m to 1.2 x 0.6m, and most stay under a metre tall. They use the same reflective lining and ducting ports as a full tent. A T5, a CFL or a small LED is enough — nothing powerful belongs at this stage.

Why clone tents are built short

A cutting has no roots yet, so for the first two weeks it depends on humidity rather than taking water up. A clone tent holds that humid air in a small volume next to the tray — a full-height tent would let it rise and spread. Most tents on this page stay under a metre tall for that reason, and the wide, shallow shape matches a standard propagation tray.

Choosing a clone tent

How many trays you run decides the footprint. A 0.6 x 0.6m tent holds one tray; 1.2 x 0.6m holds two side by side and usually ships with racks for stacking. Height is the next check — a T5 or CFL only needs a little clearance, while a compact LED with a driver on top needs extra room.

Growers also pick a tent over an open bench to keep contamination down. Before they root, cuttings pick up mould and pests easily. A zipped shell with a sealed floor tray holds spores, insects and spills inside — useful when the same room already has mature plants.

What goes with it

A propagation kit is the tray, plugs and dome. Place a heat mat under the tray to lift root-zone temperature and speed rooting in a cool room, then hang a propagation light for the gentle output cuttings need.
