Clone tents are short and wide rather than tall — built around a tray of cuttings instead of a full-grown plant. That keeps the humid air close to the propagation dome, makes the space easy to keep clean, and means a small light sits at the right distance without a rig.

Sizes run from roughly 0.6 x 0.6m up to 1.2 x 0.6m, most of them under a metre tall, with the same reflective lining and ducting ports as a full tent. They suit a T5, a CFL or a small LED — no need for anything powerful at this stage.

Why clone tents are built short

A cutting has no roots, so for the first two weeks it lives on humidity rather than water uptake. A clone tent keeps that humid air in a small volume close to the tray — a full-height tent would let it rise and disperse. Most tents here are under a metre tall for exactly that reason, and the wide, shallow shape suits standard propagation trays.

Choosing a clone tent

Start with how many trays you run. A 0.6 x 0.6m tent takes a single tray; 1.2 x 0.6m takes two side by side and usually includes racks so you can stack. Then check the height against your light — a T5 or CFL needs only a little clearance, but a compact LED with a driver on top needs more.

Contamination control is the other reason growers use a tent rather than an open bench. Cuttings are vulnerable to mould and pests before they root, and a zipped tent with a sealed floor tray keeps spores, insects and spills contained — worth having if your propagation area shares a room with mature plants.

What goes with it

A propagation kit supplies the tray, plugs and dome. A heat mat underneath lifts root-zone temperature and speeds rooting noticeably in a cool room, and a propagation light provides the gentle light cuttings need.
