Which rosin press suits your volume

Pressing force is the number everyone looks at first, but it only matters in relation to plate size and how much you press at a time. The range here runs from a press that lives in a drawer to a stacked-platen machine built for a production room.

Personal — a few grams at a time

The MRP550 manual mini applies 550kg through a small heated plate and needs nothing but a bench and a power point. The ERP-Mini adds electronic temperature control at 1t. Both are the sensible first press: cheap enough to learn on, and honest about what a personal harvest actually needs.

Small batch — a few grams to a few dozen

The HP230C-SX2 manual hydraulic brings 2.5t, the B5-3Tr manual hydraulic 5t, and the RPE3 is the electric workhorse in the middle — 4t through a 75x120mm plate, 0–150°C, a 0–300s timer, 800–1800W on a 220V AU plug. Manual hydraulics give you feel; the electric models give you repeatability.

Commercial — production runs

The Triminator TRP Stack is a 25t press with vertically stacked 15x25cm food-grade aluminium platens, sold here as a combo with the hand pump. The stacked design doubles pressing area at the same pressure, and the high tonnage is what lets you press at lower temperatures — which is where terpene retention comes from.

Pressure, temperature and time

Those three variables are the whole craft. Everything else is housekeeping.

1. Temperature. Lower and slower (roughly 70–90°C) gives a lighter, more aromatic result that tends to set up; hotter (around 90–110°C) gives more yield and a runnier consistency. Fresh, resinous material wants the cooler end.
2. Pressure. Ramp it, don't slam it. Give the material 10–20 seconds to warm and start flowing before you build to full force, or you blow out the bag.
3. Time. Most flower presses run 45–180 seconds. Watch the parchment, not the clock — when the flow stops, it is done.
4. Plate size. A plate wider than your bag wastes heat; a plate narrower than your bag leaves material unpressed. Match the bag to the plate, not the other way round.

What else you need

Parchment or press paper between the plates — the LTQ 50-sheet pack is the cheap consumable that saves the plates. Micron bags to contain the material: the 8x14cm 45 micron and 90 micron packs in plant extraction equipment are the usual sizes for flower and sift. A digital scale reading to 0.01g so you know your input and output, and somewhere airtight to put the result — see Drying & Curing.
