Inoculants, not fertiliser

Nothing on this page feeds a plant directly. Xtreme Gardening supplies living organisms that change how well roots do their job — mycorrhizal fungi that colonise the root system and effectively extend it, and bacteria that make nitrogen available. That distinction matters, because judging these products by the standards of a nutrient will mislead you.

Mykos

Granular. Mykos granular mycorrhizal inoculant in 100g, 454g, 1kg and 9.1kg. Applied dry, in direct contact with the root or the planting hole — mycorrhizae must physically touch root tissue to colonise, so scattering it on the surface achieves nothing.

WP wettable powder. Mykos WP in 340g and 1kg dissolves for application through irrigation or as a root drench — the format to use when plants are already established and you cannot get granules to the root zone.

Azos

Nitrogen-fixing bacteria in 56g, 170g, 340g and 3.7kg. Azos converts atmospheric nitrogen into a form roots can take up, and is commonly used at transplant and on cuttings where root development is the priority.

Calcarb

The odd one out — a foliar booster in 85g and 180g, supplying calcium via the leaf rather than the root. Useful where calcium uptake is limited despite adequate levels in the reservoir. Other foliar options are in Foliar Sprays.

Getting inoculants to work

1. Contact is everything. Granular Mykos must touch root tissue. Put it in the hole at transplant or dust the root ball — not on top of the medium.
2. Go easy on the fungicides. Broad-spectrum fungicides do not distinguish between the pathogen and the fungus you just paid for.
3. Give it time. Colonisation takes weeks, not days. These are not products that show a result the next morning.
4. Buy the size you will use. Living products have a shelf life. The 100g pack exists for a reason.
