Picking a grow room humidifier

Start with two checks: how large the space is, and how often you are willing to refill. Tank size is what actually limits you — leave a small unit in a dry room and it can sit empty by morning, at which point it adds nothing.

Size the reservoir to the room

Benchtop models — the Vivosun Aerostream 5L and the AC Infinity Cloudforge T3 — cover a single small tent or a propagation bench. Whole-room work is the Sonicair 23L, Horti Air 13.5L and AC Infinity Cloudforge T7 15L, which last much longer between fills. Horti Air also sells a wall-mounted ultrasonic unit rated up to 1.6L per hour when floor space is scarce.

Control beats capacity

Leave a humidifier on full blast and it overshoots — water beads on leaves and walls, and that invites mould. Cloudforge units already have smart controls and targeted vaporising. A simpler humidifier belongs on an external humidity controller or a smart sensor, so it cycles to a set point instead of running all day.

Where humidity matters most

  1. Propagation and cuttings. Cuttings with no roots cannot take up water, so they stay alive on humid air until roots appear. This is the stage a humidifier is nearest to essential.
  2. Early vegetative growth. Younger plants lose less water through the leaves and usually want more humidity than a finished flowering canopy.
  3. Winter rooms. Heaters dry the air quickly. A room that holds in summer can sit well under target as soon as the heater comes on.
  4. Alongside high airflow. A strong exhaust line is constantly pulling humid air out. A larger fan means the humidifier has to put more moisture back in.

Check the numbers with a thermometer and hygrometer, and if humidity is already too high, see dehumidifiers.

Humidifiers FAQ's

Judge it by how often you want to refill, not by tent size alone. A 5L benchtop unit covers one small tent or a propagation area, though dry weather can empty it every day. Step up to a 13L–23L reservoir for a full room, or if you would rather refill weekly than daily. Extraction matters as well — a heavy exhaust line empties the tank faster.

No. Leave it on full blast and humidity overshoots, leaving condensation on leaves and surfaces that invites mould and mildew. Choose a unit with humidity control built in, such as the AC Infinity Cloudforge models, or put a simpler humidifier on an external humidity controller so it cycles to a set point.

Propagation is the clearest case — cuttings with no roots cannot take up water and stay alive on humid air. Early vegetative growth usually wants more humidity than late flower. Winter heating is the other common trigger, because it strips moisture from a room quickly, and a strong extraction fan is always pulling humid air out.

It will add moisture, but most household units do not have a tank large enough for long runs and they have no humidity set point, so they overshoot. A purpose-built grow room humidifier gives you a larger tank, output you can control, and on some models duct connections plus a hook-up to an environmental controller.
