What silica does in a grow

Silicon is not listed as an essential plant nutrient. Growers still pour it because commercial horticulture does the same thing: once a plant takes up silica, cell walls come out stronger and stems thicken enough to hold weight under heavy light and airflow. It is among the cheapest extras on a feed chart, and among the easiest to botch — most silica bottles are strongly alkaline.

Two kinds of silica product

Traditional bottles are high-pH liquids measured in millilitres per litre. That group is Growth Technology GT Silica, Green Planet Plant Guard, Cyco Platinum Series Silica, Hy-Gen Budlink, FloraMax Silica, Flairform Silika Majic, Med Tek Super Silica and Bloom Silica. Mono-silicic acid lines — Bio Diesel Pathway 40% Mono Silicic Acid and Plant Mechanics Super Si — go in at far smaller rates because the silicon is already in the form roots take up.

Why dosing order matters

A traditional silica lifts pH hard. Meet concentrated calcium or phosphate before it is diluted and they react — the tank goes cloudy and solids drop to the bottom. Put silica into the water first, stir it through, then follow with the base nutrients. Mono-silicic acid is kinder on this point, but it still wants its own step in the mix.

Our range of silica supplements

The smallest bottle is 100mL of Bio Diesel Pathway, which is enough to try mono-silicic acid without buying a drum. Commercial rooms step up to 20L of FloraMax Silica, Cyco Platinum Series Silica and Hy-Gen Budlink. Plant Mechanics Super Si is listed in 250mL, 500mL, 1L and 5L so the same product can grow with the room. Most of what we stock is Australian-distributed and labelled in metric doses per litre of water.

How to add silica to your feed

  1. Add it first. Pour silica into plain water ahead of every other bottle, stir it through, then add base nutrients and the rest of the additives in their usual order.
  2. Check pH after, not before. Traditional silica pushes pH up. Finish the mix, let it settle, then bring pH down to target — correcting first just means doing it again.
  3. Start low. Use the label, not a forum thread. Mono-silicic acid in particular is measured in drops per litre; extra does not help.
  4. Use it through veg and early flower. Silica is there for the structure the plant is laying down. Most growers dose hardest in vegetative growth and stretch, then ease off in late flower.
  5. Never pre-mix with cal-mag concentrate. Silica and concentrated calcium react. Separate mix steps, separate storage bottles.

Reservoir pH moves a long way with silica, so the basics are worth locking in — The Importance of pH in a Hydroponic System covers the targets and why drift matters. Silica is usually paired with a cal-mag supplement, and everything else in this family sits under hydroponic additives and supplements.

Silica Supplements FAQ's

Pour it into plain water first, ahead of every other bottle. Stir the silica through completely, then add base nutrients and the remaining additives in their usual order. If undiluted silica meets concentrated calcium or phosphate, they react — the reservoir turns cloudy and solids settle on the bottom. That is why the order is not optional.

Traditional silica bottles are strongly alkaline, so they push reservoir pH up by a noticeable amount. Mix the whole solution first, give it a few minutes to settle, then bring pH down to your target. If you adjust before the silica goes in, you will do the job twice. Mono-silicic acid products move pH much less.

Traditional silica bottles give the plant silicon it still has to convert, so they are dosed in millilitres per litre and they raise pH. Mono-silicic acid bottles already hold silicon in the form roots absorb, so the dose is much smaller and the pH swing is milder. We stock both; the mono-silicic acid options cost more per bottle and last longer.

Yes — plenty of growers run both, just never pour the concentrates together. Silica goes into the water first and is stirred through; cal-mag is a later, separate step. Mix them undiluted and the calcium reacts and precipitates, which wastes both bottles and leaves residue in the reservoir and lines.

Most growers run silica through vegetative growth and the stretch into early flower — that is when the plant is laying down the structure that has to carry weight later — then taper it in late flower. Starting late gives the plant less time to lock silicon into tissue that has already formed.

Silicon is not classified as an essential plant nutrient, so a plant will finish its life cycle without it. Growers add it because plants that take up silica build sturdier cell walls and thicker stems, which helps under strong light and heavy airflow. Treat it as a useful extra on a solid feed programme, not a replacement for one.
