How a smell proof bag actually works

This collection splits into two jobs that look similar on a shelf and behave differently in use. Carbon-lined carry bags — Avert's range, plus AC Infinity's belt bag and handbag — put activated carbon between the outer shell and the liner, so air that moves through the bag is scrubbed on the way. Barrier bags do the opposite: Foil Fresh mylar and Zip-Zag dual-lock film never filter anything; they just refuse to let odour pass. Neither type is foolproof. A carbon bag with the zip only half done leaks, and a barrier bag only works while the seal is intact. Used as designed, both stop a cured harvest announcing itself in a cupboard or a share house.

What's in the range

Carbon-lined carry bags. Avert takes most of the size ladder: a 14cm x 11.5cm pocket bag with a magnetic back, a 21cm waistbag, the 5.5L travel bag, a 17L backpack insert that sits inside a pack you already own, a 27L lockable backpack with a laptop sleeve, and duffles at 95L (71cm x 42cm x 42cm) and 148L (81.5cm x 48cm x 48cm). The shell is 600D polyester/PVC over carbon lining behind a protective mesh, and every size from the travel bag up locks. AC Infinity's 900D nylon belt bag and handbag cover light everyday carry, and Zero's Budget Dino backpack puts a small lockable compartment on the entry-price rung.

Resealable barrier bags. Avert Foil Fresh mylar bags are sold in 3.5g (89 x 140mm), 28g (152 x 228mm) and 460g (356 x 420mm). Each has a viewing window and a zip seal; iron the mouth shut for long-term storage, then tear along that seal and keep using the bag as a heavy-duty zip-lock. Zip-Zag dual-lock bags are Canadian-made, clear and reusable: 28g sandwich (25-pack), 250g large (28cm x 30cm, 10-pack or 50/150-pack) and 1kg XL (10-pack or 50-pack).

How to choose a smell proof bag

1. Start with the job. Pocket bag, waistbag or belt bag for a personal amount. Duffle for a whole harvest. A 148L bag used for 28g is unused volume you paid for.
2. Carry or store? Carbon linings are built for transport; sealed barrier bags are built to sit still. Plenty of growers stack both — flower in a Zip-Zag or Foil Fresh bag, that bag inside a carbon-lined one.
3. Check the zip. Carry bags leak at the closure. Avert's smell-resistant zips lock from the travel bag up, which also stops someone opening the bag while your back is turned.
4. Buy the pack size you will use. Barrier bags sell in retail packs — 25 sandwich bags, 10 or 50 large. A bigger pack is cheaper per bag only if the seals get used before they age.

Looking after a carbon lining

Activated carbon works by adsorption and it has a finite capacity: it takes up odour until it is full, then the bag stops doing the job. Treat it as a filter, not as laundry — wipe the shell, air the bag between uses, and keep it dry, because a damp lining fills much faster. Regular use is months of decent performance, not years. Barrier bags are simpler: retire them when the zipper no longer clicks shut or the film picks up pinholes.
