Grow Tent Fans

Extraction or circulation?

Fans in a grow space do two unrelated jobs and you need both. An inline fan sits in the ducting and moves air through the tent — in through a passive intake, out through a carbon filter. That single airflow path controls temperature, keeps humidity from climbing, replenishes CO2 and strips odour. A circulation fan moves air around inside the tent without exchanging any of it, so leaves flutter, stems thicken and no still pocket of humid air forms where mould starts. A clip-on fan is the tent-scale version; a wall or floor fan does it for a whole room.

Sizing an inline fan

Match the flange to your carbon filter first — 100mm, 150mm, 200mm, 250mm and 300/315mm are the sizes here, and fan and filter must be the same. Then check the airflow rating against your tent's volume: as a rule of thumb you want to exchange the full volume of the tent every one to three minutes, and more headroom than that if you are running a filter, long or bent ducting, or a hot light. Ducting friction and the filter both cost you airflow, so a fan running at half speed with room to spare is quieter and lasts longer than one running flat out.

Silenced and EC fans

Noise is the most common regret in this category. A silenced fan wraps the motor housing in acoustic insulation, which makes a real difference in a house or a shared wall. EC motors help too — they run more efficiently at part load and are quieter at low speeds than the older AC type. If the tent is anywhere near a bedroom or a neighbour, this is worth the extra outlay.

Controllers

Most fans here are sold with some form of speed control, and the better ones adjust automatically. A temperature-and-humidity controller will ramp the fan up when the tent gets warm or damp and drop it back when conditions settle, which saves power and noise and keeps the environment far steadier than a fixed speed ever does.

The rest of the airflow chain

A fan is one part of it. You will also need a carbon filter matched to the same flange size, ducting to join them, and rope ratchets to hang the assembly. If you would rather not size each piece yourself, the fan and filter combos come already matched.
