How a carbon filter stops grow-room odour

Hang the filter inside the tent and join it to the exhaust fan. Every litre of air that leaves then has to pass through a bed of activated carbon. Hold the tent under slight negative pressure and odour has no other exit. The filter does the scrubbing; the inline fan moves the air — they work as a pair.

The carbon filters we stock

AC Infinity. Duct filters from 100mm to 300mm packed with Australian charcoal, plus refillable kits and 8lb carbon refill bags so you replace the media and keep the canister.

Rhino Pro. The longest run of sizes we carry: 100mm up to 350x1200mm, with more than one length at most diameters so you can match carbon volume to the fan.

The Can-Filter family. Can-Lite value filters (100–250mm), the Can-Original BFT series and the long-life Classic Can-Filter — Dutch-designed workhorses.

Headwind HVC, Pro Grow Dragon and Sigilventus sit alongside, and Phresh pre-filter socks fit most canisters to catch dust before it clogs the carbon.

Whole-room odour control

The carbon filter treats the air you extract. ONA neutralisers handle the smell that never enters the duct. Blocks and gels (Linen Fresh, Pro Active and more, up to 10L) sit passively in the room around the grow; Boom sprays knock back odour at doorways and on kit. Keep them near the grow area, not inside the tent next to ripening plants.

How to choose the right carbon filter

  1. Match the duct size. Flange, fan and duct all share one diameter. We stock 100mm to 350mm.
  2. Match the airflow. The filter's rated m³/h should meet or beat the fan. A fan that is too strong yanks air through before the carbon can grab the molecules.
  3. Length buys life. At the same diameter, a longer canister holds more carbon and hits breakthrough later.
  4. Consider refillable. AC Infinity refillable kits take 8lb charcoal refill bags — cheaper once the canister is paid for.
  5. Add a pre-filter sock. Dust is what kills airflow first; socks are cheap and washable.
  6. Replace at breakthrough, not on a calendar. The first whiff of the grow from the ducting means the carbon is finished — high humidity gets you there sooner.

Carbon Filters & Odour Control FAQ's

Line the filter flange up with the fan and the duct. Small tents usually take 100–150mm, mid-size setups 150–200mm, and rooms 250mm+. Then read the airflow rating: the filter's m³/h should meet or exceed the fan's, so the air sits in the carbon bed long enough to be scrubbed.

Until breakthrough — the first time you notice odour coming from the ducting, because heavier molecules have started pushing lighter ones off saturated carbon. There is no set calendar. High humidity and dusty rooms shorten the life; a pre-filter sock and staying within the filter's rated airflow stretch it. A longer canister outlasts a short one of the same diameter.

No. They do a different job. The carbon filter scrubs the air the fan extracts; ONA knocks back ambient smell around the grow, at entry points and on gear. Serious rooms run both. Park ONA products near the grow area, not inside the tent with ripening plants.

Inside, first in the run: filter → fan → ducting → out. The fan draws tent air through the carbon before the fan itself, which also keeps dust out of the impeller. Hang it high to catch the warmest, smelliest air and free up floor space.
