How flood and drain works

A flood and drain system — ebb and flow — sits pots of medium in a watertight tray. A pump on a timer fills the tray from a reservoir below, the solution rises through the medium, then the timer stops and gravity drains it back. The point is the drain, not the flood: as the solution falls it pulls fresh air down into the root zone, which is why the tray is cycled rather than left full.

The medium decides how often you cycle. Clay pebbles hold almost no water and drain in seconds, so they want short, frequent floods; rockwool and coco hold water for hours and want far fewer. Get that pairing wrong and the tray either drowns the roots or dries them out between cycles.

What this collection stocks

Flood and drain trays

The USA Style 3ft x 3ft tray is the purpose-built option — 900 x 900 x 110mm in UV-stabilised plastic with a 4mm wall, made to take a loaded tray of pots without warping. Garland's square trays are the utility alternative: the 80cm holds 76.8L and the 100cm holds 100L, both 12cm deep in recycled polypropylene, with ridged bases that lift pots clear of the standing solution. The full size range sits in Flood & Drain Trays.

Gravity-fed self-watering systems

These reach a similar result without a pump or a power point. The Autopot Hydropak 2 Pot Starter Kit packs a 35L tank, a Smart Valve, two 10-inch pots, root control mats, tubing, fittings, nutrient and a perlite/vermiculite mix; the valve opens when the tray empties and closes when it has refilled, so there is no run-off and no daily checking. Autopot advise feeding no more than four Hydrotray units from one 35L tank. The 8 Pot kit and the Hydrotray Single 12 and Double 10 modules extend the same system.

GoGro works the same way from a different valve. The 15L module and its 25L sibling need no electricity at all — the GoGro valve meters solution from a central tank — and the reservoir connection kit bag carries the fittings, inline filter and tap to start a system.

Bubblers and watering control

Three PLANT!T Aeros units also sit on this page: the bare module, the Aeros One with a twin 2500 air pump, and the Aeros IV Master four-pot unit with two air pumps and a water pump. They are deep water culture rather than ebb and flow, so if that is what you are after, start at DWC systems. The PLANT!T Water Timer runs off a tap or a gravity feed, with run times from 1 to 120 minutes and intervals from an hour to a week — useful for gravity systems, but not a mains timer for a submersible pump.

How to choose

  1. Decide pumped or gravity first. A pumped build gives you control over cycle timing. An Autopot or GoGro system gives you weeks of unattended running and no power draw. They are different answers, not better and worse.
  2. Size the tray to the space, not the plants. 800mm, 900mm and 1m squares are what is stocked here; measure the footprint you have before you count pots.
  3. Match the medium to the cycle. Clay pebbles for frequent short floods, rockwool or coco when you want fewer. Both are in grow mediums.
  4. Work out what else the build needs. A pumped tray needs a submersible pump, a reservoir it can drain back into, a timer, and enough fall between them. None of that comes with a tray.
  5. Check depth and wall thickness. A full tray of pots is heavy. Wall thickness is quoted on the purpose-built trays because it is what stops a loaded table bowing in the middle.

Completing the build

Pumps are in water pumps, tanks in tanks and reservoirs, and media in grow mediums — mostly clay pebbles and rockwool for this method. Whatever you flood the tray with, the reading that decides the result is the solution itself: the store's guide to pH in a hydroponic system is the place to start, and growing hydroponic tomatoes at home walks a first crop through end to end.

Hydroponic Flood & Drain Systems FAQ's

Flood and drain, also called ebb and flow, sits pots of medium in a watertight tray. A pump on a timer fills the tray from a reservoir, then stops and lets it drain back down. The draining half of the cycle pulls fresh air into the root zone, which is why the tray is flooded repeatedly through the day rather than left full.

Four things beyond the tray: a submersible water pump, a reservoir positioned so the tray can drain back into it, a timer to switch the pump, and fittings to join them. Trays on this page are sold on their own, so budget for the rest — pumps and reservoirs each have their own collection on the store.

Clay pebbles are the usual choice because they drain almost instantly, which suits short frequent flood cycles and keeps air moving through the roots. Rockwool and coco hold water for far longer and need fewer cycles a day. Pick the medium first, then set the timer to match it rather than the other way round.

In flood and drain the roots sit in medium and are wetted in cycles, so they spend most of the day in air. In deep water culture the roots stay permanently submerged in an aerated reservoir. Flood and drain needs a pump and a timer; DWC needs an air pump running continuously. Both are stocked, on separate pages.

No. Both are gravity-fed. A valve sits in the tray and opens when the plant has drawn the solution down, refilling from a raised tank without a pump or a timer. GoGro state their system does not require electricity to work, and Autopot advise running no more than four Hydrotray units from a single 35L tank.

Measure the space, not the plants. The stocked sizes are 80cm and 1m Garland squares and a purpose-built 900 x 900mm tray, all between 110 and 120mm deep. Wall thickness matters as much as footprint — a tray full of wet pots is heavy, and the purpose-built tray quotes a 4mm wall for exactly that reason.
