What makes a nutrient organic

The NPK in an organic nutrient comes from once-living material — seabird guano, kelp, worm castings, insect frass, plant proteins, fossilised deposits — not manufactured mineral salts. Most of it stays locked until bacteria and fungi in the root zone break it down. The feed is for the biology, and the biology feeds the plant.

Calling a bottle organic is a claim about what went into it, not a certification. One product carries a formal one — BioGuano's organic liquid nitrogen lists an Australian Certified Organic Allowed Input number. Everything else is organic by ingredient.

Organic or mineral — which suits your grow

A mineral feed dissolves immediately, you steer it by EC, and the plant feels it the same day. Organics release slowly, forgive an overfeed, and leave the media better across a season. The medium does most of the choosing: soil and beds favour organics, coco takes liquid organics well, inert hydro is where most struggle. A handful sit between — Bio Diesel Green Diamond is a mineral A+B base carrying organic metabolites, fulvic and humic acid.

Can you run organic nutrients in a recirculating system?

Some, carefully. Nutrition is not the problem — particle size and sugars are. Undissolved organic matter blocks drippers and drops into the lines, and the carbon that feeds soil biology grows slime in a warm, dark reservoir.

Hydro bottles are built around that. BioGuano+ liquid seabird guano is milled to five microns so it dissolves fully and does not clog drippers, and FloraMax OrganaBud isolates the useful kelp molecules to avoid blocked drippers, foaming and odour. Castings, frass and top dressings stay in soil and beds, never a tank. Run-to-waste sits in the middle: organics pass if filters stay clean.

Our range of organic nutrients

Complete organic feed programs

Professor's Nutrients is the most complete organic programme: Organic Grow, Grow Fast, Bloom, Flower Boost and Terpene Gold. The brand calls them 100% organic based, with over 72 macro and micronutrients plus vitamins, amino acids and natural hormones. All five pack into the Organic Growers Kit.

Guano

BioGuano+ sells liquid seabird guano in 1L and 5L, plus a dedicated organic liquid nitrogen and 2L bottles for gardens and lawns. Natures Own splits grow and bloom as Super Grow and Super Bloom, each in 1L and 5L, with a 1L kit that pairs them.

Kelp, seaweed, fulvic and humic

Hy-Gen Sea Essentials mixes kelp, seaweed and seagrass and stays low in sodium. FloraMax OrganaBud supplies potash from Ascophyllum nodosum kelp. Fulvic and humic sit with Growth Technology Fulvic and Hy-Gen Humiboosta.

Dry inputs for soil and beds

SNT worm castings in 10L and Microtek Worm Nuggets — 9kg of 6mm pelletised castings. SNT insect frass, from black soldier fly larvae, comes in 1kg, 2kg and 5kg and carries chitin plus slow-release nitrogen. SNT Regenerate is the top dressing; Dr Greenthumbs Go & Grow and Bud & Bloom land at 1.5kg.

Organic bloom boosters

Bio Diesel Organic Bloom Booster uses fossilised guano, proteins and bio-stimulants, and the brand says it works with beneficial bacteria and mycorrhizae rather than against them. Ozi Magic's bloom bottles are Budswell, Monsta Bud and Ozi Tonic. Bloom Yellow Bottles list Bloom Phat and Organic SWTNR from 300mL to 15L.

How to choose an organic nutrient

  1. Start with your media. Soil and beds take anything here. Coco wants liquid organics over a base. Inert hydro only takes the ones that say they dissolve fully.
  2. Decide base feed or booster. Complete base feeds are the minority — the Professor's Organic line, Cornucopia Coco-Grow, Green Diamond. The rest sit on top of a base.
  3. Match the stage. Grow-side bottles lead with nitrogen; bloom-side with phosphorus and potassium. Guano is sold in both.
  4. Pair with root-zone biology in soil. Organic inputs need microbes to release them. Beneficial bacteria and mycorrhizae are a separate purchase — biology, not feed.
  5. Buy the size you will use. Bottles run 250mL to 20L, and organics are perishable.

Thinking of switching? Organic vs Synthetic Nutrients walks through the trade-off, and The 5 Best Hydroponic Nutrients Australia lines the mineral options up. Or start at the full nutrients collection, then narrow to soil nutrients or coco nutrients.

Organic Nutrients FAQ's

A nutrient is organic when the NPK comes from once-living material — seabird guano, kelp, worm castings, insect frass, plant proteins, fossilised deposits — instead of manufactured mineral salts. That is why they work differently. Most organic inputs are not directly plant-available; bacteria and fungi in the root zone have to break them down first. You feed the biology, and the biology feeds the plant.

Some, if you choose bottles built for it. Two problems show up: organic matter that will not dissolve blocks drippers and settles in the lines, and the carbon feeds slime in a warm reservoir. Hydro-ready products fix that at the mill — BioGuano+ is milled to five microns so it dissolves fully, and FloraMax OrganaBud isolates the useful kelp molecules to stop blocked drippers and foaming. Keep dry inputs out of a tank.

Only when the product says so. BioGuano's organic liquid nitrogen prints an Australian Certified Organic Allowed Input number on the label. The rest of this collection is organic by ingredient, not under a certification scheme, which is typical for hydroponic inputs. If you need a formal certification, read the individual product page before you order.

In soil they usually do not, because healthy soil already holds the microbes that release organic inputs. Fresh coco, sterile media or a rebuilt bed is thin on biology, so an inoculant speeds up how quickly those inputs become available. Beneficial bacteria and mycorrhizae are sold separately from feeds — they carry no meaningful nutrition of their own.

Yes. Plenty of rooms run a mineral base for control and organic boosters for flavour and resilience. Two things to watch: total EC, because organics add less to the meter than they add to the feed, and reservoir hygiene, because organic carbon in a mixed tank still feeds slime. Mix fresh and do not leave the solution standing.

Yes. Organics shift pH more gently than mineral salts, and soil buffers a lot of the movement, but the target range is the same — and coco and hydro barely buffer at all. That is why the Professor's Organic Growers Kit includes organic pH Up and pH Down. Check when you mix, then check again the next day in a recirculating system.

Treat an opened bottle as perishable, not shelf-stable. Organic concentrates hold sugars, proteins and often live biology, so heat and sunlight break them down; a bottle left warm can ferment or separate. Keep it cool, dark and sealed, shake it before you pour, and buy the size you will finish in a season rather than the cheapest per litre.
