What makes a nutrient organic

Organic nutrients take their nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium from once-living material — seabird guano, kelp, worm castings, insect frass, plant proteins, fossilised deposits — instead of manufactured mineral salts. Most of that is not directly plant-available: bacteria and fungi in the root zone break it down first. Organic feeding is really about feeding the biology that feeds the plant.

It also means organic on a label is a claim about inputs, not a certification. One line here carries a formal one — BioGuano's organic liquid nitrogen states an Australian Certified Organic Allowed Input number. The rest are organic by ingredient.

Organic or mineral — which suits your grow

Mineral feeds dissolve instantly, steer easily by EC and give same-day control. Organics release slowly, forgive an overfeed, and build media that improves across a season. Media decides most of the choice: soil and beds are where organics are strongest, coco works well with liquid organics, inert hydro is where most struggle. A few sit deliberately between the two — Bio Diesel Green Diamond is a mineral A+B base carrying organic metabolites, fulvic and humic acid.

Can you run organic nutrients in a recirculating system?

Some, carefully. The obstacle is not nutrition, it is particle size and sugars. Undissolved organic matter blocks drippers and settles in lines, and the carbon that feeds soil biology feeds slime in a warm, dark reservoir.

The ones that work in hydro are engineered around that problem. BioGuano+ liquid seabird guano is milled to five microns so it dissolves completely and does not clog drippers, and FloraMax OrganaBud isolates the useful molecules out of kelp specifically to avoid blocked drippers, foaming and odour. Dry inputs — castings, frass, top dressings — are for soil and beds, never a tank. Run-to-waste sits between: organics feed through it if filters stay clean.

Our range of organic nutrients

Complete organic feed programs

Professor's Nutrients runs the fullest organic line — Organic Grow, Grow Fast, Bloom, Flower Boost and Terpene Gold, described as 100% organic based with over 72 macro and micronutrients, vitamins, amino acids and natural hormones. The Organic Growers Kit bundles all five.

Guano

BioGuano+ liquid seabird guano in 1L and 5L, a dedicated organic liquid nitrogen, and 2L bottles for gardens and lawns. Natures Own Super Grow and Super Bloom liquid guanos in 1L and 5L, plus a 1L kit of the pair.

Kelp, seaweed, fulvic and humic

Hy-Gen Sea Essentials blends kelp, seaweed and seagrass and is low in sodium. FloraMax OrganaBud is a potash source from Ascophyllum nodosum kelp. Growth Technology Fulvic and Hy-Gen Humiboosta cover the fulvic and humic side.

Dry inputs for soil and beds

SNT worm castings in 10L and Microtek Worm Nuggets as 9kg of 6mm pelletised castings; SNT insect frass from black soldier fly larvae in 1kg, 2kg and 5kg, carrying chitin and slow-release nitrogen; SNT Regenerate top dressing; Dr Greenthumbs Go & Grow and Bud & Bloom in 1.5kg.

Organic bloom boosters

Bio Diesel Organic Bloom Booster is built on fossilised guano, proteins and bio-stimulants, and is stated to work alongside beneficial bacteria and mycorrhizae rather than against them. Ozi Magic covers Budswell, Monsta Bud and Ozi Tonic; Bloom Yellow Bottles run Bloom Phat and Organic SWTNR, 300mL to 15L.

How to choose an organic nutrient

  1. Start with your media. Soil and beds take anything here. Coco suits liquid organics over a base. Inert hydro only suits the ones stated to dissolve fully.
  2. Decide base feed or booster. Only a few are complete base feeds — the Professor's Organic line, Cornucopia Coco-Grow, Green Diamond. The rest sit on top of a base.
  3. Match the stage. Grow-side products lead on nitrogen, bloom-side on phosphorus and potassium. Guano is sold in both forms.
  4. Pair with root-zone biology in soil. Organic inputs need microbes to release them. Beneficial bacteria and mycorrhizae are a separate purchase — biology, not feed.
  5. Buy the size you will use. The range runs 250mL to 20L, and organics are perishable.

Weighing the switch? Organic vs Synthetic Nutrients covers the trade-off in full, and The 5 Best Hydroponic Nutrients Australia puts the mineral options side by side. Otherwise start at the full nutrients collection, or narrow to soil nutrients or coco nutrients.

Organic Nutrients FAQ's

Its nutrition comes from once-living material — seabird guano, kelp, worm castings, insect frass, plant proteins, fossilised deposits — rather than manufactured mineral salts. That changes how it works. Organic inputs are mostly not directly plant-available, so bacteria and fungi in the root zone break them down first. You are feeding the biology, and the biology feeds the plant.

Some, with care. Two things go wrong: undissolved organic matter blocks drippers and settles in lines, and the carbon feeds slime in a warm reservoir. Products built for hydro solve it at the source — BioGuano+ is milled to five microns so it dissolves completely, and FloraMax OrganaBud isolates the useful kelp molecules to avoid blocked drippers and foaming. Dry inputs never go in a tank.

Only where the product says so. BioGuano's organic liquid nitrogen states an Australian Certified Organic Allowed Input number on its label. Everything else in this collection is organic by ingredient rather than by a certification scheme, which is normal for hydroponic inputs. If certification matters for your situation, check the individual product page before ordering.

In soil, the microbes are usually already there, and healthy soil releases organic inputs on its own. In fresh coco, sterile media or a rebuilt bed, biology is thin, and adding an inoculant speeds up how fast organic inputs become available. Beneficial bacteria and mycorrhizae are sold separately from feeds — they carry no meaningful nutrition themselves.

Yes, and plenty of growers do. A common approach is a mineral base for control plus organic boosters for flavour and resilience. Watch two things: total EC, because organics contribute less to an EC reading than they do to actual feeding, and reservoir hygiene, since organic carbon in a mixed tank still feeds slime. Mix fresh and do not leave solution standing.

Yes. Organic inputs move pH less abruptly than mineral salts and soil buffers a great deal, but the target range does not change and coco and hydro have little buffering. The Professor's Organic Growers Kit ships with organic pH Up and pH Down for that reason. Check at mixing and again the day after in recirculating systems.

Treat them as perishable rather than shelf-stable. Organic concentrates carry sugars, proteins and often live biology, so heat and sunlight degrade them and an opened bottle left warm can ferment or separate. Store cool, dark and sealed, shake before use, and buy the pack size you will finish inside a season instead of the cheapest per litre.
