Why train and support your plants

Untrained plants pour their energy into a single leading top and leave everything beneath it in shade. Spreading the canopy sideways lets the same light hit more sites evenly, and that is the cheapest way to get more from a fixture you already own. Support gear then holds that shape once the plant starts carrying weight.

Scrog and trellis netting

Stretch a net across the tent and you have a grid to weave new growth through as it comes up. Sea-Hawk stretch scrog netting is sold in 80cm, 100cm, 120cm and 145cm squares to match common tent footprints. AC Infinity elastic-cord trellis nets fit 2x2, 2x4, 3x3, 4x4 and 5x5 foot tents, and Gorilla nylon trellis covers 2x4 and 4x4. Larger rooms take bulk flower netting rolls.

Yo-yo hangers and ties

Retractable yo-yo hangers carry the load of branches that have started to bend under their own weight — most useful late in flower, once netting is no longer enough on its own. Day-to-day tying in is what twist ties are for: the Grow Kings 50m roll and the Vivosun roll are general-purpose, and the AC Infinity rubberised ties are gentler on soft stems.

How to choose

1. Size the net to the tent footprint. A 120cm net sags in a 100cm tent; undersize it and the corners sit empty. Use the internal footprint, not the outside of the canvas.
2. Install the net before the stretch. It goes in during late veg. Once the plant has filled the space, threading a net through it usually costs you growth.
3. Choose elastic-cord or fixed nylon. Elastic-cord nets give as the plant pushes in and come off more easily at harvest. Fixed nylon keeps a stricter grid when you want even spacing.
4. Bring hangers in for heavy branches. Yo-yos hold individual loaded branches, not the whole canopy. Most growers fit them in flower, not at setup.
