Why reservoir temperature matters

The root zone likes the high teens to the low twenties (°C). Warm nutrient solution holds less dissolved oxygen — the gas roots use fastest — and the water becomes friendlier to the pathogens that cause root rot. Cool it too far and nutrient uptake and growth both drop. Hydro and DWC growers feel this first, because the reservoir is the root zone.

Our range

Water chillers. Reservoir cooling sits with Teco's HY series: combined chiller/heater models, plus the compact HY150 which only chills. Lab and extraction work is the Across International recirculating chillers.

Submersible water heaters. Glass options are Aqua One, Aqua One Thermosafe, and the OASE HeatUp line from 50W to 400W. Aqua One's own guidance pairs wattage to reservoir litres roughly one-for-one — a 100W heater suits a 100L reservoir.

Heating the air instead? Cultiv8 tube heaters, the Vivosun Aeroflux and the AC Infinity Thermoforge live on the grow tent heaters page, not this one.

Choosing temperature control

  1. Measure first. Watch the reservoir through a full day. The afternoon peak is what stresses roots.
  2. Heaters: match watts to litres. Roughly 1W per litre, then leave the built-in thermostat to hold the setpoint. Glass heaters must run fully submerged.
  3. Chillers: size to volume and heat load. Pumps and summer rooms add heat constantly; a unit with headroom cycles less and lasts longer.
  4. Heat the air too. If the room falls below the mid-teens overnight in winter, a tube or tent heater does more than a bigger water heater will.

Browse tanks and reservoirs and DWC systems to complete the res, or controllers to automate the lot.

Water Chillers & Water Heaters Hydroponics FAQ's

Keep it in the high teens, up to about 21–22°C. Warmer water holds less dissolved oxygen and favours the organisms behind root disease; colder water slows nutrient uptake in a way you can see. DWC growers should watch it closest, because the reservoir is the entire root zone and a hot afternoon matters more than the day's average.

Pick wattage from reservoir volume at about 1W per litre. Aqua One rates the 100W heater for 100L and the 300W for 300L. Step up a size on an uninsulated tank in a cold room, leave the built-in thermostat to hold the setpoint, and run glass heaters fully submerged.

Frozen bottles can get a small reservoir through a hot week, but they swing the temperature — and those swings stress roots almost as much as the heat. A chiller holds one setpoint around the clock. Once the res sits above the mid-twenties through summer, the chiller earns its keep by stopping root problems.

They do different jobs. A submersible heater holds the root zone; if the grow space itself drops below the mid-teens overnight, cold air undoes that work. That is when a tube heater or a tent heater such as the Aeroflux or Thermoforge belongs in the room.
