How cloning machines work

Each stem is held in a collar so it hangs inside an empty chamber. A pump then either keeps a mist on those stems or moves aerated water past them. With nothing holding water against the cutting, oxygen stays high and rot is less likely — that is why strike rates usually beat a tray of plugs, and why the roots stay in view as they grow.

Choosing by site count

The number of sites is the main choice, and it should match the cuttings you start in a typical cycle, not a theoretical maximum. A 96-site machine running a quarter full still has to push a full chamber of water and keep the pump on. Home growers start with the Nutriculture X-Stream at 20 sites; TurboKlone covers 24, 48, 96 and 144; Sea-Hawk cloning stations are 24, 48 and 96.

Practical notes

  1. Keep the water cool. A warm reservoir drops dissolved oxygen and favours pathogens. Most failed runs come down to temperature, not cutting technique.
  2. Clean between runs. Warm, wet and enclosed is the default state of a cloner. Rinse and sanitise after each batch — hygiene matters more here than it does with plugs.
  3. Cuttings still need humidity and gentle light. The machine only treats the stems. A dome and a propagation light still cover the tops.
  4. Expect to top up. Mist and evaporation drain a small chamber quickly, so check the water daily, not weekly.

Cloning Machines FAQ's

Choose the site count from the number of cuttings you start each cycle, not from a number you might want later. A 96-site machine that is only a quarter full still wastes water volume and pump time. Most home growers are well covered by 20–24 sites; 48 and above suits perpetual cycles or anyone sending cuttings to more than one tent.

In most cases they root faster and you can watch the roots develop, because the stems hang in oxygen-rich moving water or mist instead of a wet medium. You pay for that in maintenance: clean between runs, top up every day, and keep the water cool. If you only take cuttings now and then, plugs are simpler. If you propagate often, a machine is the better tool.

Cool. Warm water holds less dissolved oxygen and makes life easier for pathogens, and most cloner failures come from temperature rather than how the cutting was taken. Sit the reservoir out of direct light and away from heat sources, then check it in hot weather — a chamber under a light through an Australian summer warms faster than growers usually allow for.

Yes. The machine only manages the root zone. Cuttings have no roots yet, so they still need high humidity around the leaves and a gentle light above — a propagation dome and a low-wattage propagation light. Flowering-strength lights are too strong for un-rooted cuttings.
