The number that unlocks the feed

pH decides whether nutrients stay soluble and available to roots. Most hydro and coco growers hold their solution somewhere in the mid-fives to low sixes — but the exact target matters less than checking daily, because pH moves as plants feed and water evaporates. A digital pen makes that a ten-second job.

Pens, probes and kits

Everyday pens. The Bluelab pH Pen is the bench standard, and the pH Penplus adds a replaceable probe — so a worn electrode doesn't mean a new meter. AZ Instruments' waterproof pen and the pocket pen cover the budget end.

Soil and substrate. Bluelab's soil pH pen and the Multimedia Meter with Leap probe, plus Aquamaster's S300 Pro-2, read pH directly in the root zone instead of guessing from runoff.

System probes. BNC-connection pH probes in 2m and 5m leads feed Bluelab monitors and controllers, and Aquamaster's replaceable pH–EC electrode keeps the P110 serviceable for years.

Kits. AC Infinity's pH meter kits run from the entry pen to Pro versions with interchangeable probes; Hy-Gen's indicator kit is the no-batteries backup.

Keep it reading true

A pH probe drifts with age and use — calibrate against pH 4.0 and 7.0 buffer, store it wet in KCl, and clean the electrode when readings slow down. Found the number and need to move it? pH up & down does the adjusting.

PH Meters & Testers FAQ's

Two-point calibration: rinse the probe, dip it in pH 7.0 buffer and set the reading, rinse again, then do the same in pH 4.0. Most digital pens store the calibration automatically. Do it regularly — weekly under heavy use — and always with fresh buffer, never solution poured back into the bottle.

The probe, almost always. Glass pH electrodes age with every use and die early if stored dry — sluggish or wandering readings usually mean the electrode needs a clean with probe cleaner, a soak in KCl storage solution, or replacement. On meters like the Bluelab Penplus and Aquamaster P110 you replace just the probe, not the pen.

Not directly — a standard pen needs liquid. Either test runoff water, or use a dedicated substrate meter: the Bluelab soil pH pen, the Multimedia Meter with its Leap probe, and the Aquamaster S300 Pro-2 are built to read pH straight in the root zone.

Mostly the electrode and what happens after a year. Budget pens work, but probes aren't replaceable and calibration tends to wander sooner. The Bluelab and Aquamaster pens hold calibration better, carry replaceable probes on the upper models, and have spare parts stocked — cheaper per season, not per purchase.
