Why growers run deep water culture

Roots get more oxygen in DWC than they ever will in a pot of medium. The plant sits in a net pot of clay pebbles, the roots hang into the reservoir underneath, and an airstone keeps that solution loaded with air. There is no watering timer in the method — the Nutriculture Oxypot XXL4 is sold on that idea: plant it and leave it running.

Barely any growing media

A DWC pot takes a small amount of clay pebbles and nothing else. There is no substrate left to buffer or flush. Water is the trade-off: 39L in a single bucket, 110L in a four-plant Oxypot.

Simple to read and adjust

Most systems on this page have an inspection port, so you can take a pH and EC reading without lifting the plant. That matters more in DWC than in other methods, because the roots live in the solution you are changing — the store's guide to pH in a hydroponic system explains why.

DWC systems we stock

Single-reservoir bubbler kits

One tank, one or more plants, air pumped straight into the water. The 39L single-pot system arrives with a 2500 air pump, an airstone, 5m of airline and a 200mm net pot. The Nutriculture Bubblebox is a 65L single unit that adds a timed top feed over the tray, and the Oxypot XL2 (70L, two plants) and XXL4 (110L, four plants) scale the same layout. Vivosun's VGrow DWC kit is a 15L tank the maker states is for the VGrow smart box only, not for tents.

Recirculating DWC (RDWC)

RDWC joins every site to one shared reservoir and pumps solution around the loop, so pH and EC stay the same everywhere instead of wandering bucket by bucket. Current Culture's Under Current line uses its patented Sub-Current Culture method: the UC Evo 12XL is 12 sites over 1.59m x 3.09m, and the XXL13 kits come as 4, 6 or 8-site layouts from 1.37m x 2.30m through to 1.37m x 4.33m. The Hydro Culture 4 Pot Kit is the compact option — four 20L pots, a 20L reservoir, water pump, air pump and four airstones, built for a 1.5m x 1.5m tent; the 6 Pot Kit is for 2.4m x 1.2m.

Parts and extensions

Under Current return manifolds, extension kits and the remote epicenter pipe let you grow a system or shift the control module outside the tent. Spare air pumps and airstones live in hydroponic air pumps; spare baskets live in net pots.

How to choose a DWC system

  1. Size by site count, not pot count. Work back from how many plants you want to finish. One large plant suits a 39L bucket; four plants suit the Oxypot XXL4 or the Hydro Culture 4 Pot Kit.
  2. Fit the footprint to the tent. Published dimensions settle it: 83 x 83cm for the Oxypot XXL4, 1.37m x 2.30m for the smallest Under Current XXL13. If the system does not fit, you cannot service it.
  3. Choose single tank or recirculating. One tank is cheaper and simpler. RDWC adds a water pump and more cost, but it is the only way to hold one pH and EC reading across many plants.
  4. See what arrives in the kit. Most kits include the air pump and airstones. Clay pebbles and nutrients are almost never in the box.
  5. Allow for reservoir temperature. Warm water holds less dissolved oxygen — the thing a DWC system exists to supply. If the room runs hot, budget for a chiller before a larger tank.

Running a DWC reservoir

Three habits keep a DWC reservoir honest. Leave the air pump on continuously — Current Culture treats 24/7 circulation as the point of the system, not an extra. Take pH and EC through the inspection port with a pH meter and an EC meter. Keep the solution cool: a water chiller is the usual fix in an Australian summer, because dissolved oxygen is what keeps white roots healthy instead of letting the reservoir turn.

Once a Hydro Culture recirculating kit is running, the maker says you only top it up every one or two weeks. Other systems on this page use different volumes and intervals, so use the instructions that come with yours. Nutrient bottles sit in hydroponic nutrients; premixed schedules sit in nutrient kits.

DWC Systems FAQ's

In deep water culture the plant sits in a net pot of clay pebbles over a reservoir, and the roots hang in oxygenated nutrient solution the whole time. An air pump feeds an airstone so that water stays moving and full of oxygen. You do not run a watering timer or a feed cycle — top the reservoir, watch pH and EC, and leave the air on.

Yes. Roots left in still water lose oxygen, and that oxygen is the advantage DWC has over a pot of medium. Every complete system on this page ships with an air pump and at least one airstone because of that. The one exception is sold without a pump on purpose, so several pots can share one larger air supply.

Standalone DWC is a self-contained tank, and each pot keeps its own solution. RDWC loops one shared reservoir through every site, so pH and EC stay the same across the whole system instead of wandering from bucket to bucket. Recirculating options here are Current Culture's Under Current systems and the Hydro Culture kits; the Oxypots and single-pot systems stay standalone.

Clay pebbles — and only enough to hold the plant upright in the net pot while the roots grow down into the solution. That is a fraction of the media a pot-based grow uses. Kits almost never include media; the 39L single-pot system states plainly that clay balls are not supplied.

Compare the published footprint with the tent before you buy. The Oxypot XXL4 is 83 x 83cm; the Hydro Culture 4 Pot Kit is sized for a 1.5m x 1.5m tent and the 6 Pot Kit for 2.4m x 1.2m. Under Current systems start at 1.37m x 2.30m and stretch to 1.37m x 4.33m, so they are room builds rather than tent builds.

Watch reservoir temperature. Warm water holds less dissolved oxygen, and DWC roots depend on that oxygen. Keep the air pump running the whole time, keep light off the solution so algae cannot start, and add a water chiller if the room runs hot. Read pH and EC through the inspection port rather than guessing.

No. The air pump has to stay on for the roots to stay healthy, and recirculating systems add a water pump as well. If you need a setup with no electricity, look at gravity-fed self-watering systems — they meter solution from a raised tank through a float valve and draw no power.
