DWC Systems FAQ's
In deep water culture the plant sits in a net pot of clay pebbles over a reservoir, and the roots hang in oxygenated nutrient solution the whole time. An air pump feeds an airstone so that water stays moving and full of oxygen. You do not run a watering timer or a feed cycle — top the reservoir, watch pH and EC, and leave the air on.
Yes. Roots left in still water lose oxygen, and that oxygen is the advantage DWC has over a pot of medium. Every complete system on this page ships with an air pump and at least one airstone because of that. The one exception is sold without a pump on purpose, so several pots can share one larger air supply.
Standalone DWC is a self-contained tank, and each pot keeps its own solution. RDWC loops one shared reservoir through every site, so pH and EC stay the same across the whole system instead of wandering from bucket to bucket. Recirculating options here are Current Culture's Under Current systems and the Hydro Culture kits; the Oxypots and single-pot systems stay standalone.
Clay pebbles — and only enough to hold the plant upright in the net pot while the roots grow down into the solution. That is a fraction of the media a pot-based grow uses. Kits almost never include media; the 39L single-pot system states plainly that clay balls are not supplied.
Compare the published footprint with the tent before you buy. The Oxypot XXL4 is 83 x 83cm; the Hydro Culture 4 Pot Kit is sized for a 1.5m x 1.5m tent and the 6 Pot Kit for 2.4m x 1.2m. Under Current systems start at 1.37m x 2.30m and stretch to 1.37m x 4.33m, so they are room builds rather than tent builds.
Watch reservoir temperature. Warm water holds less dissolved oxygen, and DWC roots depend on that oxygen. Keep the air pump running the whole time, keep light off the solution so algae cannot start, and add a water chiller if the room runs hot. Read pH and EC through the inspection port rather than guessing.
No. The air pump has to stay on for the roots to stay healthy, and recirculating systems add a water pump as well. If you need a setup with no electricity, look at gravity-fed self-watering systems — they meter solution from a raised tank through a float valve and draw no power.
