Matching a ballast to your lamp

Buy on two specifications, not one. Wattage is the obvious check: a 600W ballast is built to run a 600W lamp. Lamp type is the one that catches people out, because HPS, MH and CMH do not all run on the same gear. Many modern digital ballasts carry an HPS and MH rating together, and that is what makes the usual veg-to-flower swap (MH then HPS) practical on a single unit. CMH often needs a ballast built for it.

When you are replacing a failed ballast, read the specification on the old unit. Matching the lamp alone is not enough.

Digital or magnetic?

Digital (electronic) is what almost everything sold now is. Those ballasts stay cooler and quieter, they weigh far less, they strike more reliably, and they can be dimmed — on a 600W unit the usual steps are 250W, 400W and 600W. That is how you run a lamp softer through early growth and step it up later, or take the edge off in summer.

Magnetic ballasts still work and are close to indestructible. The trade-off is weight, a constant hum, and one fixed output.

Controllable ballasts

Some units take external control through a 0–10V input or a controller port, so one panel can dim several ballasts together. That is worth having if you run more than one lamp, and unnecessary on a single fixture. See timers and controllers for what plugs into them.

Pair the ballast to the lamp wattage exactly — a 600W lamp takes a 600W ballast. Most digital ballasts dim, so a 600W unit will usually also run at 250W and 400W. That gives you a lower step, not permission to drive a larger lamp. Never put a lamp on a ballast rated below its wattage.

A digital ballast is electronic. It is lighter, quieter and cooler, it strikes a lamp more reliably, and it is usually dimmable in steps. A magnetic ballast uses a coil, sits on a single fixed output, hums audibly and weighs a lot more — though it is very durable. Nearly everything sold today is digital, and dimmability is the practical reason.

Those figures are the voltage the ballast feeds the lamp, not the wall socket. Both still plug into standard Australian power. A 400V ballast drives compatible double-ended lamps at higher efficiency, so you get more light per watt, but the lamp has to be rated for it. A 240V ballast suits standard single-ended lamps. Check which your lamp needs before you buy.
