What a propagation kit includes

Three things have to hold for a cutting or a seed to take: a seat, a medium the roots can push into, and a humid climate that does not swing around. That is what these kits put in one box. The basic pack is a 24-cell tray, plugs or rockwool cubes, and a vented dome. Add a heat mat when you want the root zone held at temperature, a low-wattage light, or a small tent. The top of the range is a cloning machine, which skips the medium and hangs bare cuttings over a reservoir.

Cloning machines or trays and domes?

If you only strike a handful of cuttings, a tray and a dome is the straightforward buy. Dip the stem in rooting gel, seat it in a plug, and leave the dome closed. A cloning machine is the other path: cuttings sit in collars above a reservoir so the stems stay wet, which usually means faster roots and far bigger batches. TurboKlone machines come in 24, 48, 96 and 144 sites; the Sea-Hawk Cloning Station is 24 sites. Regular cloning points you at a machine; a few runs a year is a dome-kit job.

How to choose a propagation kit

  1. Cuttings or seeds? If the start is a cutting off a mother plant, you want a cloning kit. If you are germinating, pick a seed-raising kit — the Garland 24-cell self-watering tray is the one built for that first stretch of growth.
  2. Count your sites. How many cuttings or seedlings do you actually start together? Leave a few empty — not every cutting takes. The kits here run from 8-cell packs up to 144-site machines.
  3. Decide if you need heat. In a cool room, a warmer root zone shortens the wait to roots. Some kits already pack a heat mat; otherwise buy one on the side.
  4. Match the medium to your main system. Rockwool cubes belong in hydroponic and rockwool grows. Coco plugs and Jiffy pellets lift out cleanly into coco or soil.
  5. Check whether a light is included. Cuttings want only gentle light. You get one in the propagation tent kits and the micro greens kit; a bare tray-and-dome kit leaves lighting to you.

What you will still need

Rooting gel or powder is the consumable worth keeping on the bench — see cloning additives. After that, a propagation light if the kit did not include one, and propagation medium refills once the first tray is used up.

Propagation Kits FAQ's

The typical kit ships a cell tray, a medium the roots can form in — rockwool cubes or coco plugs — and a vented humidity dome. Larger packs add a heat mat, a low-wattage grow light, or a small tent. Cloning machines sit apart: they hold bare cuttings in collars above a water reservoir and do not use a medium at all.

A cloning kit is for cuttings taken from a plant you already have. It is built around humidity and root-zone conditions so a stem with no roots can grow some. A seed-raising kit is for germinating seed and carrying seedlings through their first weeks. Those kits usually use a simpler tray with a self-watering or capillary base, not a cloning reservoir.

That is set by the kit. Tray-and-dome kits on this page are typically 24-cell. TurboKlone cloning machines come in 24, 48, 96 and 144-site versions, and the Sea-Hawk Cloning Station holds 24. Leave spare sites — not every cutting takes — rather than filling every hole with a plant you need.

Only if the room is cool. Cuttings and seeds root faster when the medium sits a few degrees above the air, so a heat mat under the tray shortens the wait and lifts the strike rate. Some kits already include one; if yours does not, it is a cheap extra rather than a requirement in a warm room.

For cuttings, yes. Rooting gel or powder seals the cut stem and supplies the hormone that starts root formation, and strike rates are noticeably better with it. It is a consumable, and not every kit includes a tube, so check the product page before you order. Seed-raising kits do not need it.
