Types of ducting

The duct is the path that carries air between your fan, carbon filter and the vents. Choose the type by how much noise you can live with:

• Standard flexible ducting: PVC-coated and black insulated duct from 100mm to 250mm, plus AC Infinity four-layer duct — the usual pick when you just need air to move efficiently.
• Acoustic / noise-reducing ducting: rockwool or polyester insulation wrapped around the airflow so it soaks up fan hum, in sizes from 100mm to 355mm. If the extract is loud, this is the upgrade. See noise reducing ducting.
• Fittings and accessories: stainless duct clamps, Y-splitters, backdraft dampers, inline silencers, aluminium foil tape and grip tape to seal and join every joint.

Sizing your ducting

Keep the duct diameter the same as your fan and carbon filter spigots. Stepping down a size chokes airflow and adds noise. We stock the common grow sizes from 100mm through to 355mm. Buy a little more length than the straight-line distance so you can route around bends without pulling the hose taut; a stretched duct rattles and passes more vibration down the line.

Keeping it quiet

Extraction noise drops in two places: acoustic ducting that soaks up sound along the run, and an inline silencer sitting at the fan. Rockwool acoustic duct also insulates heat, while the polyester line is itch-free to handle — both arrive as 5m boxed lengths that you cut to size. Pair either with a well-sized fan and the room stays quiet while it works.

Sealing and joining

Clamp every connection with a stainless duct clamp, then wrap the joint in aluminium foil or PVC duct tape so air cannot leak at the fan, filter or wall. To extend a run, join two lengths with a coupler and clamp both ends. Sweep the hose through gentle bends rather than tight kinks — every sharp turn costs airflow.
