Most indoor rooms sit on 18 hours of light and 6 of dark through vegetative growth, then move to 12 and 12 to start flowering. Darkness is the half that matters — it has to stay truly uninterrupted — so put the cycle on a timer instead of switching it yourself, and make sure the timer still holds its program after a power cut.
You can grow without one. What it answers, and nothing else will, is how much light actually reaches the canopy. Coverage figures from the manufacturer are taken in ideal conditions, not in your tent at your hanging height. Reach for a meter when you set up a new space, compare two fixtures, or try to work out why one corner lags.
A timer only cuts power on and off at the times you set. A controller talks to the fixtures themselves: dimming several lights as one, ramping output at the start and end of a cycle, or reacting to temperature. Plenty of growers run both — timer for the schedule, controller for intensity.
Not if you want it safe. A standard plug-in timer is rated for one fixture; going over that rating is a fire risk, not just a reliability issue. Several lights need a heavy-duty timer board or a contactor box, where the timer only switches a relay and the relay carries the load. Check the amperage rating against the total draw.
