Why harvest week needs dedicated scissors

Kitchen shears are a rough match for harvest week. You make thousands of cuts, and household blades leave you with blisters, tired tendons and torn flower. Dedicated trimming scissors are ground finer, sprung so they reopen after each cut, and shaped so the tip does the close work while your hand stays loose. That is usually the difference between finishing a session and packing it in.

Harvest hand tools we stock

Trimming scissors and snips. Saboten's Pt range includes the Pt-6 harvest scissors, the hands-free Pt-5, and the extra-slim automatic Pt-15 (straight blade) and Pt-16 (angled). Next to them sit the AG-15 catch shears, which hold the off-cut instead of dropping it. ARS long-nose flower snips, Fiskars soft-touch micro-tip snips, Hydro Bitz's curved-blade trimming scissors and our budget mini snippet scissors fill the rest of the tray.

Pruning shears. Saboten's professional bypass No.1255 and anvil No.1257 sit alongside the classic bypass No.1200 and slimline trimmer No.1210. ARS's stainless steel fruits pruner is here as well, plus AC Infinity's stainless shears in straight-blade and bypass patterns — including a bundle that ships with its own cleaning kit.

Saws, trays and helpers. Woody stems and stalks are a job for the Saboten pruning saw or the BLACKJAWS 210mm folding saw. AC Infinity's large trim tray system catches leaf as you work, and the Trim Daddy 3-Plus hand trimmer speeds the rough first pass.

How to choose harvest hand tools

  1. Blade shape. Curved blades follow the round shape of a bud, so they lead when you shape flower. Straight blades hold a predictable line for leaf work and detail passes. Most trim stations keep both.
  2. Spring action. Hands-free and automatic scissors reopen on their own, which roughly halves the work your fingers do. If you trim for hours at a stretch, that is the upgrade you notice first.
  3. Bypass or anvil. Bypass shears take a clean slice through live green stems. Anvil shears crush through dry and dead wood. Match the shear to the cut, not the brand on the handle.
  4. Buy in pairs. Resin stops scissors long before the blades wear out. Keep two pairs — one cutting while the other soaks in isopropyl alcohol — so you stay on the work, not the sink.

When the harvest outgrows hand tools, move up to a bowl trimmer or a full trimming machine — and the rest of the workflow sits in post-harvest equipment.

Trimming Scissors & Pruners FAQ's

Curved blades follow the round shape of a bud, which is why most growers use them to shape flower — Hydro Bitz's curved blade is the usual pattern. Straight blades give a more predictable line when you strip leaf or do detail work. Neither choice is wrong: trim crews typically keep both on the tray and switch by job.

Bypass shears work like scissors — two blades passing each other — and leave a clean slice on green, living stems, so they are the pick for pruning and defoliation during the grow. Anvil shears bring one blade down onto a flat plate; they crush soft tissue but drive through dry or dead wood. Saboten makes both: the No.1255 bypass and the No.1257 anvil.

Mid-session, wipe the blades with isopropyl alcohol on a cloth. At the end of the day, soak them properly, dry them, then put a drop of oil on the pivot. The quicker habit is to run two pairs — one cutting while the other sits in alcohol — which is why most growers buy scissors as a pair.

They are spring-loaded scissors that open themselves after each cut, so your hand only has to squeeze. Over a long trim that roughly halves the work your fingers do and holds cramp off. Saboten's Pt-5 hands-free scissors and the extra-slim automatic Pt-15 and Pt-16 are made for those long harvest days.

Two per trimmer at the least — resin builds up quickly, and swapping to a clean pair while the sticky one soaks keeps you cutting instead of cleaning. Larger harvests also justify splitting tools by job: fine-tipped snips for bud work and a proper pruning shear for stems, so you never force small blades through thick cuts.
