Propagation and Cloning Additives FAQ's
Many cuttings will root without it, but a hormone raises the strike rate and speeds it up, which matters most with semi-hardwood material that is slow to root on its own. The products here work on auxins — Rootex state theirs carry naturally occurring auxins plus the plant hormone IBA, which encourages and accelerates roots on cuttings.
Mostly how they are applied and how well they stay put. Gel coats and seals the cut, which is why it is the most popular. Liquid is a quick dip and suits doing many cuttings at once. Powder is the traditional format and stores well. Rootex sell all three and quote different rates for each, so follow the label.
No — it is much weaker and built differently. Clonex Cloning Solution is a blend of minerals, vitamins, wetting agents and root promoters, and ROOT!T First Feed is described by its maker as a baby plant food. A cutting with no roots cannot use full-strength nutrient, so these supply what it can take without burning it.
At transplant rather than at the cut. Mycorrhizal fungi work by forming a symbiotic association with roots, so they need roots to colonise before they do anything. Mykos is stocked as granules from 100g to 9.1kg and as a wettable powder, which is the easier form to apply through a watering can at potting-on.
Because a cutting loses water through its leaves before it has any roots to replace it. A dome holds humidity around the whole tray; a mist puts moisture directly on the foliage. ROOT!T Cutting Mist is aimed at soft and semi-hardwood material and at preventing losses in the first few days, when a cutting is at its most vulnerable.
Several are made for both. Liquid Science Seed'n'Clone covers germinating seed as well as cuttings, ROOT!T First Feed is aimed at seedlings and cuttings alike, and a cube soak conditions the medium whatever goes into it. Rooting hormones are the exception — they treat a cut stem, so they have no role in sowing seed.
