Calibration is the whole game

A drifted meter is worse than no meter — it answers confidently and wrongly. Buffers and standards are known reference points: dip the probe, set the meter to match, and every reading afterwards means something. It's the cheapest insurance in the grow room.

What's on the shelf

pH buffers. 4.0 and 7.0 solutions for two-point calibration — Bluelab in 250mL and 500mL, Growth Technology in 250mL and 1L (plus a paired 4 & 7 calibration kit), Hy-Gen up to 5L for busy rooms, Nulife's classic 250mL, Flairform's kit, and Aquamaster's single-use 20mL and 100mL sachets when you want fresh solution every time.

EC standards. Conductivity references for the other meter — Bluelab's 2.77 CF / 1800ppm, Aquamaster's EC1413 in 20mL and 100mL, and Growth Technology's 1.413 solution.

Probe care. KCl storage solution from Bluelab and Growth Technology keeps pH electrodes wet between uses; probe cleaner from Growth Technology and Hy-Gen fixes sluggish readings; and Bluelab's probe care kits box the whole routine for pH, conductivity or both.

Three rules of honest meters

  1. Calibrate on schedule, not on suspicion. Weekly for hard-working pH pens; monthly is a sensible floor for EC.
  2. Fresh solution, every time. Pour a capful, calibrate, discard — never dip into or pour back in the bottle, contamination shifts the reference.
  3. Store pH probes in KCl. Never dry, never distilled water. EC probes are the easy child — rinse and store dry.

pH Buffers & Aids FAQ's

For proper accuracy, yes. Two-point calibration sets the meter at 7.0 (neutral) and then 4.0, so it reads true across the whole range growers use — single-point calibration only guarantees the meter near that one number. The paired kits from Growth Technology and Flairform exist for exactly this reason.

Treat poured solution as single-use — calibrate, then discard it. Never dip a dirty probe straight into the bottle or tip used solution back, because contamination changes the reference value. Sealed bottles keep well; the Aquamaster 20mL sachets sidestep the whole question by being fresh every time.

No — storage is KCl's job. Buffer keeps a known pH, but it doesn't have the electrolyte concentration a glass electrode needs to stay conditioned. Store the probe with a few drops of KCl storage solution in the cap, never dry and never in distilled or RO water.
