Why calibration comes first

Skip calibration and the meter still prints a number — just not a useful one. Buffers and conductivity standards are known values you can trust. Soak the probe, tell the instrument what that value is, and from then on the display is a measurement, not a guess. Nothing else in the room is cheaper insurance.

What we stock

pH buffers. Two-point work uses 4.0 and 7.0. Bluelab bottles come in 250mL and 500mL; Growth Technology in 250mL and 1L, plus a paired 4 & 7 calibration kit; Hy-Gen goes to 5L for a busy room; Nulife's classic is 250mL; Flairform sells a kit; Aquamaster packs single-use 20mL and 100mL sachets if you want a fresh pour every time.

EC standards. The other meter needs a conductivity reference. That is Bluelab's 2.77 CF / 1800ppm, Aquamaster's EC1413 in 20mL and 100mL, and Growth Technology's 1.413 solution.

Probe care. Between uses, pH electrodes stay wet in KCl storage solution from Bluelab and Growth Technology. Sluggish readings come back with probe cleaner from Growth Technology and Hy-Gen. Bluelab's probe care kits put the whole routine in one box — pH, conductivity, or both.

Three habits that keep a meter honest

  1. Work to a calendar, not a hunch. A hard-working pH pen wants a weekly check; monthly is a sensible floor for EC.
  2. One pour, then bin it. Take a capful, calibrate, throw it away — never dip the probe in the bottle or tip used solution back, because contamination moves the reference.
  3. pH probes live in KCl. Not dry, not distilled water. EC probes are simpler — rinse them and put them away dry.

pH Buffers & Aids FAQ's

Yes, if you want the meter accurate across the range you actually grow in. Two-point calibration sets 7.0 (neutral) then 4.0, so the instrument reads true across the whole band growers use. A single-point check only proves the meter near that one number. That is why Growth Technology and Flairform sell the two buffers as a pair.

Once it is out of the bottle, treat it as single-use: calibrate, then tip it out. Do not dunk a dirty probe in the bottle, and do not pour used solution back — either will move the reference value. Unopened bottles keep. Aquamaster's 20mL sachets dodge the question entirely because each sachet is a fresh pour.

No. KCl is what you store in. Buffer holds a known pH, but it does not have the electrolyte concentration a glass electrode needs to stay conditioned. Put a few drops of KCl storage solution in the cap. Never leave the probe dry, and never sit it in distilled or RO water.

One box with the full clean-and-condition routine for a single probe type. Bluelab kits cover pH, conductivity, or both, so you are not hunting a missing bottle on calibration day. When readings have gone slow or stubborn, a care kit plus a fresh buffer usually brings the probe back.
