HPS & MH Grow Lights FAQ's
Single-ended (SE) lamps screw into a standard E40 socket and suit most home setups. Double-ended (DE) lamps clip in at both ends, run at higher efficiency and hold their output better over time, but they need a DE-specific fixture and ballast and are generally used at 600W and above. The two are not interchangeable — check what your reflector takes before buying a lamp.
Sooner than they stop working. HID lamps lose output gradually, so a lamp can still light up while delivering noticeably less usable light than when new. Most growers replace HPS and MH lamps roughly annually under continuous use, or every few cycles. This is the ongoing cost that LED avoids, and it is worth factoring in when comparing the two.
Often, but check first. Many modern digital ballasts are rated to run both, which is what makes the traditional MH-for-veg, HPS-for-flower switch practical on one setup. Older magnetic ballasts are usually lamp-specific. The ballast must match both the wattage and the lamp type — running the wrong combination shortens lamp life and can damage the ballast.
