HPS & MH Grow Lights FAQ's
A single-ended (SE) lamp screws into a standard E40 socket — that is the usual home-setup fitting. A double-ended (DE) lamp clips in at both ends. DE lamps run at higher efficiency and hold their output better over time, but they need a DE-specific fixture and ballast and are generally used at 600W and above. Do not mix the two: check what your reflector takes before you buy a lamp.
Change them before they stop striking. Output from an HID lamp fades gradually, so it can still light up while delivering noticeably less usable light than when it was new. Under continuous use, most growers replace HPS and MH lamps roughly once a year, or every few cycles. LED avoids that ongoing cost, and the replacement spend belongs in any comparison of the two.
Often you can, but read the ballast first. Many modern digital ballasts are rated to run both, which is what makes the usual MH-for-veg, HPS-for-flower switch practical on one setup. Older magnetic ballasts are usually lamp-specific. Match both the wattage and the lamp type — the wrong combination shortens lamp life and can damage the ballast.
