Electrical conductivity (EC) is a measure of water's ability to conduct an electrical charge, reflecting the concentration of nutrients in your solution. EC meters, displaying readings in either mS/cm (millisiemens/cm) or μS/cm (microsiemens/cm), are crucial for precisely gauging the nutrient levels in your hydroponic solutions. A conversion factor is used to translate μS/cm to mS/cm, with 1,000 μS/cm equating to 1 mS/cm.

TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) meters, often used interchangeably with EC meters, calculate the total inorganic and organic substances in a liquid. They measure the EC of dissolved salts and then convert this reading into parts per million (ppm), providing an accurate indication of nutrient concentration. This measurement is pivotal for determining the right nutrient balance for your plants.

Low conductivity implies a nutrient-deficient solution, potentially leading to slow growth and plant health issues. Conversely, high conductivity indicates a nutrient-rich solution, which, if too concentrated, can harm your plants. Monitoring TDS or EC levels is crucial for understanding whether you're overfeeding or underfeeding your plants.
