EC / PPM & TDS Meters FAQ's
Nothing physical — they're the same measurement in different units. The meter reads electrical conductivity (EC); TDS and PPM numbers are calculated from it using a conversion scale, commonly 500 or 700. That's why two meters can honestly disagree on ppm while agreeing on EC. If you swap between meters, compare in EC.
It depends on the crop, stage and feed chart — seedlings and cuttings want a weak solution, heavy flowering wants the strongest. Rather than chasing one magic number, follow your nutrient brand's chart, then use the meter to confirm what you actually mixed and to watch how the reservoir moves between top-ups.
Dip the clean probe in a conductivity standard — 2.76/2.77 CF or 1413 µS solutions are the common references — and set the meter to match. Use fresh solution each time and never pour it back in the bottle. Monthly is plenty for most growers; commercial rooms calibrate more often.
No — that's the easy part. EC electrodes store clean and dry, no KCl required, which is why a Truncheon lasts as long as it does. Just rinse the probe in fresh water after use so nutrient salts don't crust on the electrodes.
