Two figures decide whether a hydroponic feed is actually doing its job. pH is the lock on nutrient availability at the root; EC is the strength of the solution. Miss either and the crop tells you inside a few days. Keep a pH pen and an EC pen on the bench, or one combo meter, and the check takes half a minute.

Four meter-care habits

1. Calibrate on a schedule with pH 4.0 and 7.0 buffer. A meter that has wandered is more dangerous than not measuring at all.
2. Keep pH probes wet. Use KCl storage solution. Distilled water is out, and so is a dry cap.
3. Clean the electrode as soon as the reading gets lazy — probe cleaner is cheaper than hunting pH problems that are not there.
4. Swap the probe, not the meter. Replacement electrodes fit the Bluelab pH Penplus, Aquamaster P110 and AC Infinity Pro kits.
