Why growers choose LECA

Firing the clay is what gives these pebbles their job. Each one comes out with a hard ceramic shell around a porous core: the core holds water and feeds it back to the roots as the medium dries, while the spaces between pebbles stay open for air. Porosity sits around 70-80%, so air and water can both move. Across a crop they do not compact and they do not rot. They are pure mineral — no fibres, no solvents, nothing of their own going into the solution. A decent bag also carries a low inherent EC, which matters: a medium that leaches salts will fight your reservoir readings.

The clay balls we stock

One grade, three bags: 8-16mm. Professor's Nutrients and Grow Kings cover the 10L, Green Planet the 25L, and Accent Hydroponics the 50L Colossal bag used to fill larger systems. Green Planet's bag is 100% expanded clay — pH neutral, sterile and non-degradable, with high air-filled porosity for root growth and microbial activity. The 50L bags ship as bulky items and may attract additional shipping.

Systems clay balls suit

Recirculating systems default to clay balls because the pebbles are round and even. The gaps they leave drain fast and empty fully — exactly what a flood-and-drain table needs between cycles. In deep water culture they hold the plant firmly above the reservoir while the roots hang below. Under drip the free-draining structure stops solution pooling at the crown. They fill net pots without falling through, and a layer over the surface of a soil or coco pot works as an evaporation barrier.

Pair them with net pots and hydroponic pots and flood and drain systems. Inert medium means the reservoir, not the substrate, sets the numbers — pH in a hydroponic system covers that side. Coco, soil and the other substrates sit on the full grow mediums range.

LECA Clay Balls FAQ's

Yes — a new bag arrives coated in fired clay dust, and that dust will cloud a reservoir and jam pumps, drippers and filters. Put the pebbles under a strong tap and keep stirring them until the runoff is completely clear. Fresh bags take longer than most people budget for. Reused pebbles get the same rinse before they go back into a system.

Yes, soak after the rinse. Dry clay is porous — it acts like a sponge — and it will pull water off young roots at the worst possible time. Cover the rinsed pebbles with plain water for at least 6 hours; leave them up to 24 hours if you want a full soak. Once they are saturated they go into the system ready to hand moisture to the plant instead of stealing it.

On first use, yes they can. The high-temperature firing often leaves pebbles neutral to slightly alkaline, so reservoir pH creeps up until they settle. Drain the plain-water soak, then soak again for 1-2 hours in water adjusted to pH 5.5-6.5. After that the medium is effectively inert and the solution, not the substrate, drives your pH.

Yes — reuse is the point. Expanded clay does not degrade and lasts indefinitely, so one bag of pebbles can run crop after crop. Between crops pick out the root matter, rinse thoroughly, then sterilise: a rolling boil for at least 20 minutes, or 30-60 minutes in 3-6% food-grade hydrogen peroxide. Rinse and re-soak before they go back in.

Buy by bag volume, not pebble diameter — everything we stock on this page is 8-16mm. That grade stays in net pots, flood-and-drain tables and deep water culture without falling through the mesh. A 10L bag covers a few pots or a top-up; 25L is enough for a small system; take the 50L when you are filling a table or several sites, and remember it ships as a bulky item.
