Why growers use LECA

LECA is fired clay, and the firing is what makes it useful: each pebble has a hard ceramic shell around a porous core, so it holds moisture and releases it back to the roots as the medium dries, while the gaps between pebbles stay open. Porosity runs around 70-80%. Clay balls do not compact over the life of a crop, they do not rot, and they are pure mineral — no fibres, no solvents, nothing of their own added to the solution. Good product also carries a low inherent EC, which matters because a medium that leaches salts will fight your reservoir readings.

Our range of clay balls

The buyable range is 8-16mm pebbles in three bag sizes: 10L from Professor's Nutrients and Grow Kings, 25L from Green Planet, and a 50L Colossal bag from Accent Hydroponics for filling larger systems. The Green Planet bag is 100% expanded clay — pH neutral, sterile and non-degradable, with high air-filled porosity for root growth and microbial activity. The 50L bags ship as bulky items and may attract additional shipping.

Which systems clay balls suit

Clay balls are the default aggregate for recirculating hydroponics, and the reason is the shape. Round, uniform pebbles leave large gaps that drain rapidly and completely, which is what a flood-and-drain table needs between cycles. In deep water culture they hold the plant firmly above the reservoir while the roots hang below. In drip systems the free-draining structure stops solution pooling at the crown. They fill net pots without falling through, and a layer spread over the surface of a soil or coco pot works as an evaporation barrier.

LECA Clay Balls FAQ's

Yes. New pebbles carry fired clay dust that will cloud a reservoir and clog pumps, drippers and filters. Rinse them under strong running water, agitating as you go, until the water running off is completely clear. A fresh bag takes longer than most people expect. Do the same with reused pebbles before they go back into a system.

Soak it. Dry clay is porous and behaves like a sponge, so it will wick moisture away from young roots at exactly the wrong moment. Submerge the rinsed pebbles in plain water for at least 6 hours, and up to 24 for a full soak. They then go into the system already saturated, ready to pass moisture to the plant rather than take it.

They can on first use. High-temperature firing can leave pebbles neutral to slightly alkaline, which nudges reservoir pH up until they settle. The fix is to drain the plain-water soak and re-soak for another 1-2 hours in water adjusted to pH 5.5-6.5. After that the medium is effectively inert and your pH is driven by the solution, not the substrate.

That is the main reason to use them — expanded clay is non-degradable and lasts indefinitely, so the same pebbles run crop after crop. Between crops, pick out root matter, rinse thoroughly, then sterilise: either a rolling boil for at least 20 minutes, or a soak in 3-6% food-grade hydrogen peroxide for 30-60 minutes. Rinse and re-soak before they go back in.

Bag size matters more than pebble size here, because the stocked range is all 8-16mm. That grade suits net pots, flood-and-drain tables and deep water culture without falling through mesh. Choose 10L for a few pots or topping off, 25L for a small system, and the 50L bag when filling a table or several sites — noting it ships as a bulky item.
