Yes — a new bag arrives coated in fired clay dust, and that dust will cloud a reservoir and jam pumps, drippers and filters. Put the pebbles under a strong tap and keep stirring them until the runoff is completely clear. Fresh bags take longer than most people budget for. Reused pebbles get the same rinse before they go back into a system.
Yes, soak after the rinse. Dry clay is porous — it acts like a sponge — and it will pull water off young roots at the worst possible time. Cover the rinsed pebbles with plain water for at least 6 hours; leave them up to 24 hours if you want a full soak. Once they are saturated they go into the system ready to hand moisture to the plant instead of stealing it.
On first use, yes they can. The high-temperature firing often leaves pebbles neutral to slightly alkaline, so reservoir pH creeps up until they settle. Drain the plain-water soak, then soak again for 1-2 hours in water adjusted to pH 5.5-6.5. After that the medium is effectively inert and the solution, not the substrate, drives your pH.
Yes — reuse is the point. Expanded clay does not degrade and lasts indefinitely, so one bag of pebbles can run crop after crop. Between crops pick out the root matter, rinse thoroughly, then sterilise: a rolling boil for at least 20 minutes, or 30-60 minutes in 3-6% food-grade hydrogen peroxide. Rinse and re-soak before they go back in.
Buy by bag volume, not pebble diameter — everything we stock on this page is 8-16mm. That grade stays in net pots, flood-and-drain tables and deep water culture without falling through the mesh. A 10L bag covers a few pots or a top-up; 25L is enough for a small system; take the 50L when you are filling a table or several sites, and remember it ships as a bulky item.
