Water Testing Equipment & Controllers FAQ's
A working kit is three pieces: a pH meter, an EC meter — or one combo pen that does both — and calibration buffers so the numbers stay honest. Add KCl storage solution if you want the pH probe to last. That covers 95% of growers. Inline monitors and dosing controllers are the upgrade once the room is larger or you are measuring all day.
Probes wander with use, age and temperature. If a pH pen says 6.0 when the solution is 6.6, you will chase deficiencies that are not real. Check pH meters against 4.0 and 7.0 buffer on a regular cycle — more often if you measure a lot — and check EC meters against a conductivity standard.
Always wet, in KCl storage solution, with the cap fitted. Never leave a pH probe dry, and never park it in distilled or RO water: that leaches the electrolyte from the glass bulb and kills the sensor. A capful of storage solution between uses is the habit that roughly doubles how long the probe lasts.
Separate pH and EC pens are the cheaper way in, and one dying does not take the other reading with it. A combo meter — Bluelab Combo, One-Pen, Aquamaster P110 or H600 — is quicker on the daily pass and adds temperature. If you go combo, choose a replaceable probe: you will replace the electrode long before you replace the meter.
