The two numbers that run the feed

Two figures decide whether a hydroponic feed is actually doing its job. pH is the lock on nutrient availability at the root; EC is the strength of the solution. Miss either and the crop tells you inside a few days. Keep a pH pen and an EC pen on the bench, or one combo meter, and the check takes half a minute.

Jump to the right shelf

Brands on this shelf

Bluelab sets the standard on this shelf — pH pens, the Truncheon EC meter, Combo and One-Pen meters, the Guardian inline WiFi monitor, plus probes, Peripods and care kits. Aquamaster Tools is the sharper-priced pro line (P, E, H and S series) with replaceable electrodes and matching calibration solutions. AC Infinity kits put interchangeable-probe testing inside their ecosystem, while Growth Technology and Flairform cover buffers, probe cleaner and KCl storage. AZ Instruments and Essentials fill the value end.

Four meter-care habits

  1. Calibrate on a schedule with pH 4.0 and 7.0 buffer. A meter that has wandered is more dangerous than not measuring at all.
  2. Keep pH probes wet. Use KCl storage solution. Distilled water is out, and so is a dry cap.
  3. Clean the electrode as soon as the reading gets lazy — probe cleaner is cheaper than hunting pH problems that are not there.
  4. Swap the probe, not the meter. Replacement electrodes fit the Bluelab pH Penplus, Aquamaster P110 and AC Infinity Pro kits.

Automate the next step with controllers, dosers and monitoring.

Water Testing Equipment & Controllers FAQ's

A working kit is three pieces: a pH meter, an EC meter — or one combo pen that does both — and calibration buffers so the numbers stay honest. Add KCl storage solution if you want the pH probe to last. That covers 95% of growers. Inline monitors and dosing controllers are the upgrade once the room is larger or you are measuring all day.

Probes wander with use, age and temperature. If a pH pen says 6.0 when the solution is 6.6, you will chase deficiencies that are not real. Check pH meters against 4.0 and 7.0 buffer on a regular cycle — more often if you measure a lot — and check EC meters against a conductivity standard.

Always wet, in KCl storage solution, with the cap fitted. Never leave a pH probe dry, and never park it in distilled or RO water: that leaches the electrolyte from the glass bulb and kills the sensor. A capful of storage solution between uses is the habit that roughly doubles how long the probe lasts.

Separate pH and EC pens are the cheaper way in, and one dying does not take the other reading with it. A combo meter — Bluelab Combo, One-Pen, Aquamaster P110 or H600 — is quicker on the daily pass and adds temperature. If you go combo, choose a replaceable probe: you will replace the electrode long before you replace the meter.
