Any additive you put on the root zone to build root mass faster counts. Four products share the label: rooting hormones such as IBA and NAA that tell a cutting to throw roots; kelp and fulvic biostimulants that feed the processes behind root growth; microbial inoculants that colonise the root zone; and concentrated mineral feeds that supply the phosphorus and traces a young root system is short of.
Three moments cover most of the range: striking a cutting, transplant, and early veg while the roots are still getting going. Some bottles are narrower. House & Garden Roots Excelurator is dosed for the first five weeks of growth, Atami Rootbastic for the first three weeks of veg, and Flairform Roots plus FloraMax Root-XS are sold from seed through to early bloom.
Rooting hormone is one kind of root stimulator, not a separate category. The active part is an auxin — usually IBA, sometimes IBA and NAA together — which signals a cutting to grow roots from the cut stem. That is only useful on cuttings. Kelp and fulvic biostimulants, microbial inoculants and mineral root feeds make up the rest of the range, and those are for plants that already have roots.
Yes, if they are sold to build root mass. Mycorrhizal fungi throw hyphae that reach further than the roots themselves, and rhizobacteria improve what those roots can take up. That is why Mykos, Great White, Tribus and Root Roids sit here, and also on the store's Microbes & Beneficial Bacteria page, which groups products by organism rather than by job.
Usually yes, and plenty of growers do: hormone gel on the cutting, an inoculant at transplant, then a liquid biostimulant through veg. Read the labels before you pour two concentrates into one tank. FloraMax and Flairform both warn against mixing their organic additives with chlorines or peroxides. Add Root Roids after you have set pH, because it will nudge pH up on its own.
Most of the range is rated for all three. Form is the practical split. Granular inoculants such as Mykos need to touch the root, so they suit a medium you can dig a hole in. Liquid inoculants and biostimulants suit a recirculating system. Tribus states it will not cause problematic biofilm in hydroponic use, which is the usual worry with living products in a reservoir.
