Why fabric pots

A root that reaches the side of a plastic pot turns and circles. A root that reaches the side of a fabric pot hits air, stops, and the plant branches behind it. That is air pruning, and it is why a fabric pot produces a dense fibrous root mass rather than a spiral.

Better drainage and oxygen

Fabric drains through its whole surface, not through a few holes in a base. That makes overwatering harder and keeps oxygen available in the root zone — the practical benefit most growers notice first.

Handles where you need them

Every Rhizo-Pot from 16L up has handles. Below that the pots are light enough to move by the rim; above it, a wet 56L pot is genuinely heavy and handles stop the fabric tearing.

Cooler root zones

Evaporation through the fabric wall cools the medium, which matters in an Australian summer and under high-output LEDs where a black plastic pot bakes.

Our Rhizo range

Rhizo-Pot without handles: 3.8L, 8L and 12L — propagation, potting on and small plants.

Rhizo-Pot with handles: 16L, 23L, 30L, 39L, 56L and 78L, most sold in multipacks so a full tent can be kitted in one order.

RhizoStand pot stands: the small stand for pots up to 16L and the XL for pots up to 39L, lifting the pot clear of the tray so it drains and gets airflow underneath.

Also stocked: the Rhizobrain unit.

Choosing a pot size

  1. Match the pot to the finished plant, not the seedling. Potting up in stages is fine, but a plant grown to a 1.5m canopy in a 12L pot will be root-bound and thirsty every day.
  2. Count what fits the tent. Four 30L pots need more floor than nine 12L pots. Work backwards from the footprint and the number of plants.
  3. Expect to water more often. Fabric breathes, which is the benefit and the cost. A fabric pot dries faster than the same volume of plastic, especially on a stand with airflow underneath.
  4. Use a stand or a tray. Fabric sitting flat in its own runoff defeats the drainage. RhizoStand lifts pots up to 16L and up to 39L; a flood tray works for larger sizes.
  5. Buy multipacks if you run a full room. Most sizes come in packs, and matching pots means matching dry-back across the room.

See Pots & Trays for the full range, or Flood & Drain Trays if you are setting up runoff.

Rhizo FAQ's

Work backwards from the finished plant. As a rough guide, short vegetative periods and small plants suit 8L to 12L, a standard indoor plant grown to around a metre suits 23L to 30L, and long veg or outdoor plants justify 56L or 78L. Also check the tent footprint — four 30L pots take much more floor than nine 12L pots.

Yes, and that is the trade-off. Water evaporates through the whole fabric wall as well as from the surface, so you will water more often than with plastic of the same volume. In return you get far better oxygen in the root zone and it is much harder to overwater. On a RhizoStand with air underneath, expect to water more often again.

When a root reaches the fabric wall it meets air and stops growing rather than turning and circling the pot. The plant responds by branching further back, producing a dense fibrous root mass instead of a spiral of thick circling roots. More root tips means more surface area for water and nutrient uptake.

Every size from 16L upwards — 16L, 23L, 30L, 39L, 56L and 78L. The smaller 3.8L, 8L and 12L pots are supplied without handles because they are light enough to lift by the rim. On the big sizes handles matter: a saturated 56L pot is heavy, and lifting fabric by its edge is how fabric tears.

Not strictly, but a fabric pot sitting flat in its own runoff loses much of its drainage advantage and the base stays wet. A stand lifts the pot so it drains freely and gets airflow underneath, which also helps air-prune the bottom roots. The small stand takes pots up to 16L and the XL takes pots up to 39L.

Yes. Shake out the old medium, wash them and let them dry completely before storing. They will stain and the fabric softens with use, neither of which affects performance. Replace them when the fabric thins enough to tear at the seams or handles, which on regular use is typically after several runs.
