PH Meters & Testers FAQ's
Rinse the probe, stand it in pH 7.0 buffer and set the reading, rinse again, then repeat in pH 4.0. That is two-point calibration. Most digital pens store the result automatically. Do it often — weekly if you use the pen hard — and only with fresh buffer. Never pour used solution back into the bottle.
Almost always the probe. Glass pH electrodes wear with every dip and fail early if you store them dry. When readings go sluggish or wander, clean the electrode with probe cleaner, soak it in KCl storage solution, or replace it. On the Bluelab Penplus and the Aquamaster P110 you swap the probe only and keep the pen.
Not as a dip-in reading — a standard pen needs liquid. Test the runoff, or pick a substrate meter built for the root zone: Bluelab's soil pH pen, the Multimedia Meter with its Leap probe, and the Aquamaster S300 Pro-2 all read pH there directly.
The electrode, and how it behaves after a year. Budget pens do work, but the probe is not replaceable and calibration usually starts to wander sooner. Bluelab and Aquamaster pens hold calibration longer, put replaceable probes on the upper models, and have spare parts in stock — cheaper across a season than at the till.
