Why Zip-Zag

Most barrier bags are heat sealed: you close them once and cut them open. Zip-Zag bags reseal, which changes what they are useful for — storage you go back into rather than storage you put away.

Resealable without losing the barrier

The bag is a multi-layer barrier film with a press seal, so it keeps the odour and moisture control of a barrier bag while opening and closing repeatedly. That is the whole point of the product.

Black bags block light

The black storage range adds light exclusion. Light degrades stored plant material over time, so for anything being kept for weeks or months rather than days, the black bags are the better choice even though they cost more.

Retail packs scale with use

Sizes come in packs from 10 up to 150 depending on the size. Buying the 150 pack of 250g Large bags costs far less per bag than the pack of 10 — worth it if you get through them.

Our Zip-Zag range

Clear bags: Sandwich 28g in a 25 pack, Large 250g in 10, 50 and 150 packs, and XL 1kg in 10 and 50 packs.

Black storage bags: 1oz/28g in a 25 pack, 0.5lb/250g in a 10 pack, 1lb/500g in a 10 pack, and XL 2lb/1kg in a 10 pack.

Storing properly

  1. Fill the bag, do not part-fill it. Air in the bag is what causes degradation. Use the size that matches the amount, or press the air out before sealing.
  2. Choose black for long-term. Light is one of the main causes of degradation in stored plant material. If it is going away for months, use the black range.
  3. Check the seal is fully closed. Run a finger along the whole length. A press seal that is closed at both ends and open in the middle looks shut and is not.
  4. Add humidity control for anything long-term. A sealed bag holds whatever moisture went in with the contents. Two-way humidity packs hold it at a set level instead.
  5. Keep them cool and dark regardless. A barrier bag stops odour and moisture transfer. It does nothing about heat, and heat is what degrades contents fastest.

Zip-Zag FAQ's

A supermarket zip-lock is a single layer of polyethylene, which odour passes straight through. Zip-Zag bags are a multi-layer barrier film with a press seal, so they hold odour and moisture in the way a heat-sealed barrier bag does while still opening and closing repeatedly. That combination is what the product exists for.

Clear for anything you want to see into or store short-term; black for anything being kept for weeks or months. The black film blocks light, and light is one of the main causes of degradation in stored plant material. The black range covers 28g, 250g, 500g and 1kg, all in 10 or 25 packs.

Match the bag to what is going in it rather than buying one size for everything. The clear range runs from 28g sandwich size through 250g Large to 1kg XL; the black range covers 28g, 250g, 500g and 1kg. Filling a bag properly matters — a part-full bag holds a lot of air, and air is what degrades contents.

Yes, that is the main advantage over a heat-sealed bag. The press seal opens and closes repeatedly. The practical limit is contamination and wear on the seal rather than a fixed number of uses — if the seal no longer closes cleanly along its full length, or the bag has held something you would not want transferring, retire it.

If you are storing for more than a few weeks, yes. A sealed barrier bag holds whatever moisture level went in with the contents — it does not correct it. Two-way humidity control packs absorb or release moisture to hold a set level, which is what stops material either drying out or sitting damp enough to grow mould.
