What silica does in a grow

Silicon is not classed as an essential plant nutrient, but growers add it for the same reason commercial horticulture does: plants that take up silica build sturdier cell walls, and that shows up as thicker stems better able to carry weight under heavy light and airflow. It is one of the cheapest additions to a feed schedule and one of the easiest to get wrong, because most silica products are strongly alkaline.

Two kinds of silica product

The traditional additives are high-pH liquids dosed by the millilitre per litre — Growth Technology GT Silica, Green Planet Plant Guard, Cyco Platinum Series Silica, Hy-Gen Budlink, FloraMax Silica, Flairform Silika Majic, Med Tek Super Silica and Bloom Silica all sit in this group. The newer mono-silicic acid products, such as Bio Diesel Pathway 40% Mono Silicic Acid and Plant Mechanics Super Si, are dosed in far smaller amounts because the silicon is already in the form roots can take up.

Why dosing order matters

Traditional silica raises pH sharply and will react with concentrated calcium and phosphate if they meet undiluted — the result is a cloudy reservoir and solids on the bottom. Silica goes into the water first, gets stirred through, and only then do the base nutrients follow. Mono-silicic acid products are less troublesome on this front but still deserve their own step in the mix.

Our range of silica supplements

Sizes run from a 100mL bottle of Bio Diesel Pathway — enough to trial mono-silicic acid without committing — up to 20L drums of FloraMax Silica, Cyco Platinum Series Silica and Hy-Gen Budlink for commercial rooms. Plant Mechanics Super Si comes in 250mL, 500mL, 1L and 5L, so you can scale as your room does. Most of the range is Australian-distributed and sold in metric doses per litre of water.

How to add silica to your feed

  1. Add it first. Silica goes into plain water before anything else, stirred through completely, then base nutrients and additives in their usual order.
  2. Check pH after, not before. Traditional silica lifts pH noticeably. Mix the full solution, let it settle, then adjust pH down to your target — adjusting early just means doing it twice.
  3. Start low. Follow the label rather than a forum. Mono-silicic acid products in particular are dosed in drops per litre, and more is not better.
  4. Use it through veg and early flower. Silica supports the structure the plant is building. Most growers run it hardest in vegetative growth and stretch, and taper in late flower.
  5. Never pre-mix with cal-mag concentrate. Silica and concentrated calcium react. Keep them in separate steps of the mix and separate storage containers.

Because silica shifts reservoir pH so much, it pays to be confident on the basics — The Importance of pH in a Hydroponic System covers what to aim for and why drift matters. Silica is usually run alongside a cal-mag supplement, and the rest of the range sits in hydroponic additives and supplements.

Silica Supplements FAQ's

First, before anything else. Add silica to plain water, stir it through completely, then add base nutrients and other additives in their normal order. Silica reacts with concentrated calcium and phosphate if they meet undiluted, which shows up as a cloudy reservoir and solids settling on the bottom.

Traditional silica additives are strongly alkaline and will lift reservoir pH noticeably. Mix your full solution first, let it settle for a few minutes, then adjust pH down to your target. Adjusting before the silica goes in simply means doing the job twice. Mono-silicic acid products shift pH far less.

Traditional silica additives supply silicon in a form the plant must convert, so they're dosed by the millilitre per litre and raise pH. Mono-silicic acid products supply silicon already in the form roots absorb, so dose rates are much smaller and pH impact is lower. Both are stocked here; the mono-silicic acid options cost more per bottle but go further.

Yes, and many growers run both — just never mix the concentrates. Silica goes into the water first and gets stirred through, then cal-mag as a separate step. Combining them undiluted causes calcium to react and precipitate, which wastes both products and leaves residue in your reservoir and lines.

Most growers run silica through vegetative growth and the stretch into early flower, when the plant is building the structure that has to carry weight later, then taper it off in late flower. Starting it late gives the plant less time to incorporate silicon into tissue that's already formed.

Silicon isn't classified as an essential plant nutrient, so plants complete their life cycle without it. Growers add it because plants that take up silica build sturdier cell walls and thicker stems, which helps under strong light and heavy airflow. Treat it as a useful addition to a solid feed programme, not a substitute for one.
