Why Sensen

These are workhorse pumps. Nothing about the range is exotic — it is a wide, closely spaced ladder of flow rates at sensible prices, with impellers sold separately so a pump is repairable rather than disposable.

A flow rate for every job

The HJ series covers the small end: 600L/h, 800L/h and 1400L/h, which suits single reservoirs, small fountains and recirculating trays. The HQB series takes over from 2000L/h through 3000L/h, 4500L/h, 5500L/h and 6800L/h for flood tables, larger reservoirs and pond duty.

Replaceable impellers

The impeller is the part that wears and the part that jams. Sensen sells replacements in multiple styles and sizes, which means a pump that has lost flow is usually a ten-minute fix rather than a new purchase.

Electromagnetic air pumps

The ACO series uses an electromagnetic diaphragm rather than a small vibrating armature. They are built for continuous duty at higher output than a typical aquarium pump — the 20W and 45W models suit multi-bucket DWC and larger reservoirs.

Our Sensen range

HJ submersible pumps: HJ-742 at 600L/h, HJ-942 at 800L/h and HJ-1542 at 1400L/h.

HQB submersible pumps: HQB-2500 at 2000L/h, HQB-3500 at 3000L/h, HQB-4500 at 4500L/h, HQB-5000 at 5500L/h and HQB-5500 at 6800L/h.

ACO air pumps: electromagnetic air pumps in 20W and 45W.

Spares: replacement impellers in multiple styles and sizes, and a non-return valve.

How to size a submersible pump

  1. Work out the flow you need, then check it at height. Every pump loses output as it lifts. A pump rated 3000L/h at zero head may deliver far less at the 1.5m you are actually pumping to.
  2. Add for pipe run and fittings. Long hose runs, elbows and drippers all cost flow. Size up rather than exactly to your calculation.
  3. Keep the pump fully submerged. These are submersible pumps and they use the water around them for cooling. Running one dry, even briefly, is the fastest way to kill it.
  4. Fit a filter or keep the intake clear. Root fragments and perlite are what jam impellers. A pre-filter costs less than an impeller.
  5. Buy the impeller before you need it. A spare impeller on the shelf turns a dead pump mid-cycle into a short interruption instead of a lost day.

See Water Pumps for the full range across brands, or Tanks & Reservoirs if you are building the reservoir too.

Sensen FAQ's

Start from how fast you want to turn the reservoir over and how high you are lifting. The HJ series covers 600L/h to 1400L/h for small reservoirs and recirculating trays; the HQB series runs 2000L/h to 6800L/h for flood tables and larger systems. Always check the flow figure at your actual head height, not the headline maximum.

Nine times out of ten it is the impeller — either worn, or jammed with root fragments, perlite or scale. Sensen sells replacement impellers in multiple styles and sizes, so this is usually a cheap fix rather than a new pump. Pull the intake cover, check the impeller spins freely, and clean or replace it.

No. Submersible pumps use the surrounding water to cool the motor, so running one dry will damage it quickly — sometimes within minutes. Keep the pump fully submerged at your lowest reservoir level, not just when the tank is full. That is the single most common way these pumps die.

An ACO electromagnetic pump drives a diaphragm with an electromagnet rather than a small vibrating armature. That gives higher output and it is built for continuous duty, which matters when the pump runs 24 hours a day. The 20W and 45W models suit multi-bucket DWC and larger reservoirs where a small aquarium pump would be working at its limit.

On an air line, yes if the pump sits at or below water level — otherwise a power cut siphons solution back down the line into the pump. On a water line it stops the pipework draining back into the reservoir each time the pump stops, which keeps the system primed and avoids the surge when it restarts.
