Harvest & Extraction FAQ's
The baseline is a sharp pair of trimming scissors, a tray to work over, a dark airy place to hang the plants, and an airtight container for the cure. Scale up with the size of the run: a bowl trimmer or benchtop machine once hand trimming is no longer realistic, a moisture meter to call the dry, and a scale that reads to 0.01g if you weigh concentrates.
Wet trimming takes the leaf off immediately after the cut, while the plant is still turgid. It is faster, easier on a machine and needs less hanging space. Dry trimming keeps the fan leaf on through the dry, which slows moisture loss and generally protects aroma, but it needs more rack space and a machine rated for dry material. Several trimmers on this page handle both.
Most growers switch when a run takes more than a weekend to hand trim. A hand-cranked bowl trimmer covers small dry batches; a benchtop unit such as the CenturionPro Mini or TableTop suits a serious home grow; the Dry Batch Trimmer range runs from 3.15kg to 22.5kg an hour for commercial volume. Work out dry weight per run first, then match throughput to it.
Drying comes first, then curing, then storage. Hang or rack the trimmed flower somewhere cool and dark for one to two weeks, then seal it at around 62% relative humidity to cure. Drying & Curing covers racks, humidity packs, TerpLoc pouches and glass jars; the storage and smell proof bag ranges take over after that.
Solventless work uses only water, ice, heat and pressure: bubble bags knock trichomes off in ice water, a dry-sift screen does it mechanically, and a rosin press squeezes the result into oil. Solvent extraction dissolves the material in butane or ethanol and then pulls the solvent back out, which is why it needs closed-loop gear, a vacuum oven and proper ventilation. Solventless costs less to start and is far simpler to run safely.
Flower usually wants a 200g to 500g scale that reads to 0.01g. Concentrates are a 100g x 0.01g pocket scale job. If you are weighing whole dried harvests, step up to a 5000g x 0.1g bench unit — capacity matters more than the last decimal place at that size.
