Fountain pumps for circulation and features

The Pondmaster range runs 2800L/h, 3500L/h and 5000L/h. Those are the sizes that suit a feature, a small waterfall or general circulation on a domestic pond.

Air pumps for oxygen

The O2 Plus range covers 2100L/h, 4200L/h and 6600L/h of air. Aeration matters most in warm weather, when water holds less dissolved oxygen exactly as fish and bacteria demand more of it.

Aeration is not the same as circulation

A water pump moves water and adds some oxygen at the surface. An air pump puts air directly into the water column through a diffuser. A pond with fish through an Australian summer generally wants both.

Sizing pond equipment

  1. Aim to turn the pond over about once an hour. A 3000L pond wants roughly 3000L/h at the height you are actually pumping to, not at zero head.
  2. Account for head height. Every pump loses flow as it lifts. Read the curve at your real lift, not the headline number.
  3. Aerate more in summer. Warm water holds less dissolved oxygen. That is when fish are most active and bacteria are working hardest — the worst possible combination.
  4. Keep the pump submerged. Submersible pumps use the surrounding water for cooling. Running one dry kills it quickly.
  5. Clean the intake regularly. Leaf litter and string algae blocking an intake is the most common cause of a pump that has "stopped working".

Pond-One FAQ's

A common starting point for an ornamental pond is turning the whole volume over about once an hour, so a 3000L pond wants a pump still delivering around 3000L/h at your actual lift height. The Pondmaster range covers 2800L/h, 3500L/h and 5000L/h. Always read the flow at the head height you are pumping to rather than the maximum figure.

If the pond holds fish, usually yes — particularly through summer. A water pump circulates and picks up some oxygen at the surface; an air pump puts air directly into the water column through a diffuser, which is far more effective at raising dissolved oxygen. Warm water holds less oxygen exactly when fish need more.

Size it to pond volume and how heavily stocked it is. The range runs 2100L/h, 4200L/h and 6600L/h of air. A lightly planted pond with a few fish needs far less than a densely stocked one, and depth matters too — pushing air deeper takes more pressure, so a deeper pond warrants stepping up.

The usual causes are a blocked intake, a jammed impeller or the pump having run dry. Leaf litter and string algae will choke an intake surprisingly fast in warm weather. Check and clear the intake first, then the impeller. Running a submersible pump dry, even briefly, can damage it permanently because it relies on water for cooling.
