Choosing an OASE pond pump

The single most useful distinction in this range is duty. AquaMax Eco Classic is built to run continuously feeding a filter or a watercourse. Aquarius is built for fountains and features. Buying across that line is the mistake that shortens a pump's life.

AquaMax Eco Classic for filtration

Seven sizes from 2500 to 17500, designed for continuous filter and watercourse duty. These are the pumps that run all day every day, which is why they are engineered differently from a fountain pump that works in bursts.

Aquarius for fountains and features

Aquarius Universal Premium covers 6000 to 12000 and Premium ECO 3000 to 4000. The Aquarius Solar pumps at 700 and 1500 run from a panel with no mains connection, which suits a feature in a part of the garden with no power.

Filtration in two formats

BioSmart 18000 is a flow-through biological filter for a larger pond. The Biopress sets in 4000, 6000 and 10000 pair a pump with a pressurised filter, which can sit below water level and be hidden. Filtral UVC 1500, 3000 and 6000 combine pump, filtration and UV in a single submersible unit for smaller ponds.

Aeration and maintenance

AquaOxy 500, 1000 and 4800 and OxyMax 100, 200 and 400 cover aeration — which matters most in summer, when warm water holds less dissolved oxygen exactly as fish and bacteria demand more. AquaSkim 40 and AquaSkim Gravity pull surface debris before it sinks; PondoVac Classic and PondoVac 4 lift what has already settled.

Water features and extras

The nozzle range runs from the Schaumsprudler 35-10 E and Vulcan 43-3 through the Midi II Trumpet Jet to the Water Jet Lightning. HeatUp heaters cover 50W to 400W, and the FishGuard automatic feeder and its bracket handle feeding while you are away.

Sizing a pond system

  1. Turn the pond over about once an hour. A 10,000L pond wants a pump still delivering near 10,000L/h at the head height you are actually lifting to — not the headline figure at zero head.
  2. Match the pump to the job, not just the flow. AquaMax Eco Classic for continuous filter duty, Aquarius for fountains and features.
  3. Size filtration to the fish load. Fish and feeding raise the biological load far more than volume alone. A koi pond needs more filter and more UV than the same litres of plants.
  4. Add UV only for green water. UV clears free-floating algae. It does nothing for blanket weed, and it is not a substitute for biological filtration.
  5. Aerate through summer. Warm water holds less oxygen. An AquaOxy or OxyMax running through the hot months is cheap insurance against a fish loss.

For the rest of the brand see OASE, or Pond Supplies to compare across brands.

OASE Pond FAQ's

AquaMax Eco Classic is designed for continuous duty feeding a filter or a watercourse, and runs from 2500 to 17500. Aquarius Universal Premium and Premium ECO are aimed at fountains and water features. If the pump will run all day driving filtration or a waterfall, AquaMax is the range built for it; using a fountain pump for that job shortens its life.

A common starting point is turning the whole pond volume over about once an hour, then checking the pump output at your real head height rather than its maximum. A waterfall 1.5m above the surface costs significant flow. If the pump also feeds a pressure filter, allow for that restriction on top before choosing a size.

BioSmart 18000 is a flow-through biological filter that sits above water level. Biopress sets in 4000, 6000 and 10000 pair a pump with a pressurised filter that can be buried or hidden below water level. Filtral UVC 1500, 3000 and 6000 combine pump, filter and UV in one submersible unit for smaller ponds where simplicity matters most.

No — the Aquarius Solar 700 and 1500 run from a solar panel, which is what makes them useful for a water feature in a part of the garden with no power run. Output follows the sun, so flow varies through the day and stops in heavy cloud. They suit ornamental features rather than filtration, which needs to run continuously.

HeatUp heaters run 50W, 100W, 150W, 200W, 300W and 400W. A common starting point is roughly 1W per litre for a body of water in a sheltered position, more where it is exposed or the ambient temperature drops sharply overnight. Sizing slightly up is safer than under — an undersized heater runs constantly and still loses ground on a cold night.
