Grower Tip

  • Use a soil moisture meter and hold 40-120 mbar - the ideal range for microbial and root health.
  • Store spare or resting soil dry in ventilated containers to stop it going anaerobic; rehydrate thoroughly before the next run.

Features

Water-only cultivation

All nutrients, minerals and microbes for natural plant growth are already in the mix - grow with just water in an adequate soil volume.

Co-developed with KiS Organics

Formulated with the data-driven living soil scientists at KiS Organics (USA) and designed for Australian conditions.

Certified and compliant

SXC Certified Organic and compliant with the AS3743 premium potting mix standard.

Lab-tested

Tested for nutrient balance, EC, pH and heavy metals.

Premium base ingredients

Coarse sphagnum peat, perlite, scoria and certified organic compost, with 5% walnut shell biochar.

Active biology built in

Inoculated with a multi-strain Bacillus consortium to enhance nutrient cycling, supporting a full soil food web of microbes and beneficial predators.

Reusable and no-till ready

Reuse it cycle after cycle with light amendments - no bottles, spent soil or root balls to throw away.

  1. 1
    Size the pot

Allow at least 50L of living soil per fast-growing annual - two 25L bags per pot. Fabric pots help keep the root zone aerated.

  2. 2
    Hydrate and settle

Water slowly and evenly until the profile is moist right through, then let the pot settle for up to 24 hours to activate the biology.

  3. 3
    Plant and mulch

Plant, then cover the surface with an organic mulch such as straw or wood chips to hold moisture and feed the surface biology.

  4. 4
    Water, nothing else

Keep the soil evenly moist - roughly 5-10% of pot volume per watering (1.5-3L in a 30L pot) - and stop before runoff.

  5. 5
    Boost with organics

Skip synthetic liquid fertilisers - they knock back the microbial life. For an extra kick, top-dress with worm castings or brew botanical teas.

  6. 6
    Reuse it

After harvest, re-amend lightly and replant - the mix is built for no-till reuse, cycle after cycle.

What pot size do I need to grow water only?

Allow a minimum of 50L of soil per fast-growing annual - two 25L bags per pot. Soil volume is what carries a plant through a full cycle on water alone, so results are directly relative to how much soil you give each plant. Fabric pots are a great match, keeping the root zone aerated.

Do I really not need any nutrients?

In an adequate soil volume, a full cycle runs on water alone - the nutrients, minerals and microbes are already balanced in the mix. Avoid synthetic liquid fertilisers, which set back the soil biology doing the feeding. If you want to push things along, organic inputs like worm castings or botanical teas are the way to go.

How often should I water living soil?

Keep it evenly moist through the whole cycle rather than swinging wet to dry. A good guide is 5-10% of pot volume per watering - 1.5-3L for a 30L pot - adjusting frequency to plant size and conditions. Don't water to runoff: runoff means you've overdone it or the soil has gone hydrophobic.

Can I reuse the soil after harvest?

Yes - it's designed as a no-till base you can run cycle after cycle with light re-amendments, so there's no root ball or spent soil to throw out. Top-dress between rounds with a balanced amendment - SNT Regenerate Soil Top Dressing is made for rejuvenating no-till beds - and store any resting soil in ventilated containers so it stays aerobic.

Is it certified organic?

Yes. The KiS Mix is SXC Certified Organic and compliant with the AS3743 premium potting mix standard, and every ingredient is listed openly - from coarse sphagnum peat and certified organic compost to fish bone meal and neem seed meal. It's also lab-tested for nutrient balance, EC, pH and heavy metals.

There are bugs in my soil - is that normal?

Completely normal, and a good sign. A living soil hosts an ecosystem of microbes and beneficial predators, and over time you'll spot a diverse range of insects under the mulch layer. They're part of the soil food web, breaking down organic nutrients into plant-available forms and helping protect against disease. Leave them to do their job.
