Grower Tip

  • For best results, follow the gel with Clonex Cloning Solution (CCS): water cuttings with it at 5mL/L from the first sign of roots.

Features

The original propagating gel

Launched in 1989 as the world's first propagating gel, this Australian innovation is used by professional propagators and hobbyists the world over.

3g/L IBA

The active constituent is indole butyric acid at 3g/L. Purple is the Clonex strength made for semi-hardwood cuttings.

Seals the cut

The gel seals cut tissue straight away, helping to protect the cutting from infection and embolism.

Stays on the stem

Unlike propagating powders and liquids, the gel stays in contact with the stem throughout the rooting period.

Hormones, vitamins and minerals

A blend of rooting hormone, vitamins, mineral nutrients and anti-microbial agents, with vitamins to protect delicate new root tissue.

Easy to apply

The gel gives even coverage with no powder mess: decant, dip and plant.

Goes a long way

Expect several thousand cuttings per litre, depending on the diameter of the cutting and the dipping depth.

APVMA registered

Registered with the APVMA and safe for use on all types of plants.

  1. 1
    Sterilise your tools

Clean and sterilise your blade or snips before you start.

  2. 2
    Decant the gel

Pour a small amount of Clonex into a clean container. Never dip cuttings straight into the bottle, as this contaminates the gel.

  3. 3
    Take the cutting

Cut the stem at a 45-degree angle just below a node.

  4. 4
    Dip

Dip the cut end into the gel to the depth you want roots to form.

  5. 5
    Plant

Place the cutting in your propagation medium.

  6. 6
    Discard the leftover gel

Throw out whatever is left in the container. Don't pour used gel back into the bottle.

  7. 7
    Store it cold

Reseal the bottle and store it in a cool, dark place, in the fridge if possible.

Which size should I buy?

Clonex goes a long way. Expect several thousand cuttings per litre, depending on the diameter of the cutting and how deep you dip. On that basis, the 50mL jar is enough for a hundred cuttings or more, which suits home growers striking the odd tray. The 250mL and 1L suit regular propagation and mother plant programs. Opened Clonex is guaranteed effective for up to two years when it's stored cold and used as directed.

Is Clonex Purple the right strength for my cuttings?

Clonex is colour-coded by strength. Purple contains 3g/L of IBA and is made for semi-hardwood (medium wood) cuttings. Green, at 1.5g/L, is for softwood cuttings, and Red, at 8g/L, is for hardwood. If your cuttings form callus but no roots, the hormone level is too high for that plant and a lower concentration should be used.

Why use a gel instead of a rooting powder or liquid?

Propagating powders are rooting hormone mixed with talc, and liquids are hormone dissolved in de-ionised water. Clonex gel seals the cut tissue as soon as you dip, which helps protect the cutting from infection and embolism, and it stays in contact with the stem for the whole rooting period, so the cutting gets consistent exposure to the hormone. It's also easy to apply evenly, with no powder mess.

Why has my Clonex gone runny?

Clonex gel liquefies when it's exposed to warm conditions or stored badly. Put it back somewhere cool, ideally the fridge, and its viscosity returns. To keep the gel in good condition, store it in a cool, dark place and never dip cuttings directly into the bottle, which contaminates it. Decant what you need and discard the leftovers.

How long does Clonex last once it's opened?

Clonex gel is guaranteed effective for up to two years after opening, provided you follow the guidelines. Don't dip cuttings directly into the bottle. Always decant the amount you need and throw away any excess. Store the bottle in the refrigerator where possible, or otherwise in a cool, dark place.

Description

Growth Technology Clonex Purple is a rooting hormone gel for cloning: a high-performance rooting compound for striking cuttings and clones. Dip the cut stem and the gel stays in contact around it, sealing the cut tissue, supplying the hormones needed to promote root cell development, and providing vitamins to protect the delicate new root tissue. Launched in 1989 as the world's first propagating gel, this Australian innovation is used by professional propagators and hobbyists the world over.

What's in Clonex Purple

  • Active constituent: indole butyric acid (IBA) at 3g/L. Purple is the Clonex strength for semi-hardwood cuttings.
  • A high-performance formulation of hormones, vitamins and mineral nutrients, with anti-microbial agents.
  • A bright, translucent gel that clings to the stem.
  • APVMA registered, and safe for use on all types of plants.

Why choose a gel?

Propagating powders are rooting hormone mixed with talc, and liquids are hormone dissolved in de-ionised water. Clonex Rooting Hormone Gel does more:

  • It seals the cut tissue instantly and comprehensively, helping to protect the cutting from infection and embolism.
  • It stays in contact with the stem throughout the rooting period, unlike powders and liquids.
  • It gives even coverage and is easy to apply.
  • It's formulated for increased strike rates and quicker, more prolific root growth.

How to use

  • Clean and sterilise your cutting tools.
  • Decant a little gel into a clean container. Don't dip cuttings straight into the bottle.
  • Cut the stem at a 45-degree angle just below a node.
  • Dip the cutting in the gel to the depth you want roots, then place it in your propagation medium.
  • Discard the used gel.

Store in a cool, dark place, in the fridge if possible. Clonex is guaranteed effective for up to two years after opening when it's stored and used this way.

Sizes: 50mL, 250mL and 1L. Expect several thousand cuttings per litre, depending on the diameter of the cutting and the dipping depth.
