Drying and curing do different jobs

The dry is a subtraction. Over one to two weeks, hanging buds shed the water that would rot them if it stayed. The cure is the slower job: sealed at a steady humidity, leftover moisture evens out and harsh fresh-cut flower settles into something worth keeping. This page has the gear for both stages, plus the storage that holds the result.

What we stock for dry and cure

Drying racks. Sea-Hawk hanging mesh towers stand 1.8m tall with six layers, in 75cm and 90cm diameters. Alongside them: AC Infinity's 4-tier and 6-tier hanging racks, collapsible 8-layer dryers rated to 10kg, Bloom Works' 6-layer detachable dry net, and a stackable 650mm x 650mm Holland Forge tray for flat drying. The full set lives in Drying Racks.

Curing storage. Grove Bags TerpLoc pouches from 28g to 454g build their own curing micro-climate — you do not need packs. Miron violet-glass jars (50mL to 400mL) keep light off cured flower. Zip-Zag resealable barrier bags take bulk from a 28g sandwich size up to 1kg XL.

Humidity control. Boveda two-way 62% packs, in 4g and 8g, add or pull moisture so a sealed container stays at the curing sweet spot. When a pack goes stiff and crinkly, it is finished.

Odour control and carry. Carbon-lined smell proof bags from Avert and AC Infinity, plus lockable storage supplies, keep finished flower discreet when you move it.

Weighing up. On Balance scales run from a 100g x 0.01g pocket unit to a 5000g x 0.1g table top. The whole line is in Digital Scales.

Getting the dry right

  1. Take it slow. Hold 18–20°C and 55–60% humidity for 10–14 days. A fast, hot dry is how flower ends up smelling like lawn clippings.
  2. Shade and airflow. Let air travel around the rack; do not point a fan at it. Light and heat strip terpenes, so keep the drying space in shade.
  3. Wait for the snap. Small stems should snap rather than fold. That snap is when flower leaves the rack for the jar.
  4. Hold 62%. Seal in glass or TerpLoc. Burp daily in week one, then weekly. A humidity pack holds the figure so you are not chasing it.

This is the last stop on the post-harvest line — trimming gear, extraction and scales sit on the Harvest & Extraction page.

Drying & Curing FAQ's

The dry is the first one to two weeks after harvest: hang whole branches, or spread trimmed buds on a mesh rack, until the small stems snap instead of bending. That is how the bulk of the water leaves. The cure is the sealed stage that follows — a jar or TerpLoc pouch held near 62% relative humidity — where leftover moisture evens out, harshness drops and aroma stays. Skip or rush the dry and the cure cannot put it back.

Most growers sit between 58% and 65% relative humidity; 62% is the figure the industry has settled on. Boveda 62% two-way packs add or take moisture so the container holds that point on its own. Grove Bags TerpLoc pouches are made to land in the same band without a pack. Dip below about 55% and buds go dry and harsh; climb past 65% and mould becomes a real risk.

Plan on 10–14 days in a cool, dark room — about 18–20°C with humidity at 55–60%. If it finishes in under a week the space is usually too warm or too dry, and the flower smells like hay. A hanging mesh rack lets air travel around the buds; do not aim a fan straight at them.

Either works. The choice is control against convenience. Glass such as Miron's violet jars is airtight, reusable and simple to burp, and the dark glass keeps light off cured flower. TerpLoc pouches weigh less, take no shelf space and handle humidity themselves, so they suit bigger harvests. A lot of growers do both: pouches for the bulk, a jar for the one they open most.

Once the dry is finished, not while it is still running. Wait until buds are jar-dry — small stems snap, the outside feels crisp — then seal them with a two-way pack so the container sits at 62%. Put a pack in while the flower is still wet and you trap moisture and wear the pack out far faster than it is built for. In a sealed container a pack lasts months; stiff and crinkly means it is done.
