Why train and support your plants

Left alone, most plants put their energy into one dominant top and shade everything beneath it. Training spreads the canopy sideways so light reaches more sites evenly, which is the cheapest way to get more from a light you already own. Support gear then holds that shape once the plant carries weight.

Scrog and trellis netting

A net stretched across the tent gives you something to weave growth into as it rises. Sea-Hawk stretch scrog netting comes in 80cm, 100cm, 120cm and 145cm squares to match common tent footprints; the AC Infinity elastic-cord trellis nets cover 2x2, 2x4, 3x3, 4x4 and 5x5 foot tents; Gorilla nylon trellis suits 2x4 and 4x4. For larger rooms there are bulk flower netting rolls.

Yo-yo hangers and ties

Retractable yo-yo hangers take the weight off branches bending under their own load — useful late in flower when netting alone is not enough. Twist ties handle the day-to-day tying in: the Grow Kings 50m roll and the Vivosun roll are general-purpose, while the AC Infinity rubberised ties are gentler on soft stems.

How to choose

1. Match the net to your tent footprint. A 120cm net in a 100cm tent will sag; too small and you lose the corners. Measure the internal footprint, not the outside dimensions.
2. Fit the net before you need it. Netting goes in during late veg, before the stretch. Threading a net through a plant that has already filled the space costs you growth.
3. Pick elastic or fixed. Elastic-cord nets flex as the plant pushes into them and are easier to remove at harvest; fixed nylon holds a stricter grid for even spacing.
4. Add hangers for the heavy end. Yo-yos support individual branches carrying weight, not the whole canopy. Most growers add them in flower rather than at setup.
